This year, a lot of public schools have banned clown costumes. And because murders are associated with them, it's understandable. However, when an elementary school bans Halloween altogether, it's too much.
Some elementary schools this year decided to ban Halloween, in the fear it might offend someone. This is supposed to be a nice thought, but it ends up being kind of ridiculous. As we live our lives, anything we do can offend someone. To ban an entire holiday that gives little kids joy just to hopefully stay on everyone's good side simply doesn't make sense. In fact, banning the holiday actually offends a lot of kids and parents.
It's one thing to ban COSTUMES that are particularly offensive, for example ones that are examples of culture appropriation. But to ban the whole holiday is another issue.
Halloween has been around for years and it always offends some people here and there. But it also has inspired halloween plays and shows and movies and books and trick-or-treating and so many wonderful things.
If we ban Halloween now, we're no better then those people who used to ban it back in the day because they were so scared it was associated with witchcraft. Sounds kind of silly now, doesn't it?
So instead of banning it, we should take a while to enjoy this wonderful, wacky holiday and make sure it goes on for years to come.
