Every fall, every senior is cramming their entire life’s accomplishments into a college application, trying to make it seem as if they’re the next Bill Gates or someone that they had posted on their wall when they were kids. As like every other senior, while you’re filling out your application, people were asking me where I was applying. I told people the regular in-state colleges, and all of their reactions were normal, except for when I had told them one of my only out-of-state colleges: University of North Dakota. Most of their reactions made the reasons ever more entertaining, so the moment that I had finally decided on North Dakota made it all the more satisfying.
The number one reaction that I had gotten nine times out of ten was, “Why there? You really want to go somewhere that it’s that cold?” To myself, I always thought, “Well I know that it is pretty much like the tundra up there, so if I end up losing a toe or a finger due to the cold weather it’s only normal. So I should fit in pretty easily.” With knowing that, I was sold.
In the college hockey world, North Dakota is one of the top programs in the NCAA (who had also won the National Championships this year) and their team is anything but A1. Sure they’re good on the ice, but off the ice, they’re even better. I’d just like to take a minute of silence for the men on the team because they’re so fine looking. But aside from already being a huge hockey fan, knowing that they’re good looking made the school even more appealing.
“Canada eh?” Yes. Glorious Canada, the country that loves maple syrup and Canadian bacon. How could I pass up a possible trip to Canada? And the Canadian accents are pretty cute too, so why not find me a cute Canadian. Plus, I can finally say that I’ve been out of the country! Another advantage is that I can go to an NHL game, and maybe meet a pro cutie and that’s been my dad’s dream since I was born.
Putting all of the crazy reasons why I think I need to really explain why I had chosen the University of North Dakota. To be completely honest, I was pre-determined to go there before birth. Everyone on my dad’s side of the family had gone to the university, so it’s only natural that I’d go to school there. In the end, it’s a family tradition, and I had completely fallen in love with the campus, programs and the opportunities it will provide me in my next stage of life.
With all of the seniors trying to become the next Bill Gates in their college applications, It’s also just as important to pick out a school that you want to go to. Disregard what other people may say, and go to where you feel will your new home for the next four years of your life. Just remember, to laugh at the responses that you could get, and make those your driving force for going there. So here’s to frostbitten appendages, hockey cuties, Canada and family traditions.
