Why Guinea Pigs Make Great Pets

Anytime you have a conversation with someone about if they have any pets the usual response is that they have a cat or a dog or maybe a fish. Although guinea pigs aren't uncommon or exotic animals they are not usually the first pet type that will come to mind. Here's why guinea pigs are actually super awesome.

They make all sorts of noises

Now I know what you're thinking "geez why would I want a pet that make a bunch of different noises?" Guinea pigs make a variety of sounds three of which are...

Squeaking or Talking... This is their idle noise. They make it when they're content and exploring a familiar environment.

Wheeking

This is their super excited noise. You will mainly hear them make this around feeding time. Sometimes they make it just from hearing the fridge open.

Purring

The meaning of this sound is debatable. I personally believe that they make this when they are being pet just the right way, other people think that this noise is only made when they are annoyed.

They get themselves into funny situations

I mean c'mon don't try to tell me that this isn't cute.

They're super snuggly

There's nothing that your pig would rather do in the evening than lay on your lap wrapped in a blanket. It's seriously the cutest thing ever.

You can dress them up

Princess Piggy strikes again!

There are things that you need to consider before adopting a guinea pig. Firstly, they poop a ton. I'm not joking when I say that, you can clean their living area as much as you want and it'll be covered with poop within an hour. You can try potty training them but it really only works if they are in a large area. Secondly they eat a ton. The most money that you will spend on them is food. They require a healthy diet of veggies, hay, water and pellets every day to sustain them. Thirdly you should always get them in at least pairs. Guinea pigs prefer to be with other guinea pigs, just like humans if they are by themselves for too long they get lonely. Finally you need to really put in the time and effort to make sure that they're happy. For example keep them in the proper conditions and don't do anything purposely to stress them out.

If you're not ready to commit to a pet the size of a dog or even a cat I would say that a guinea pig is the way to go. Do your research to determine what type would be best for you and make sure you understand all of the things that need to be bought before bringing them home. Finally enjoy their cute little company! They are truly lovable creatures if you give them the right environment to be so.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
