First off the show "Gotham" is about a young 1st-grade homicide detective James Gordan in the city of Gotham. It houses the most crooked cops and sketchy politicians the world has to offer. Although this is before Bruce Wayne was Batman, before Ivy was Poison Ivy. "Gotham" takes place in a time where all the villains you see in the most recent Batman movies are just finally developing into who they are as people.
This show is amazing for a lot of reasons. One of these reasons is how the characters slowly fall into their insanity. Even the really good people (given this is just Jim Gordan), start to realize that they need to adapt to this harsh world. But they learn to hold on to that little bit of humanity very tightly when given these very dark situations. I mean who doesn't like a crime/ superhero/drama show! Recently one of the characters has succumbed to their insanity and have proven to be a very big adversary. Nygma, who in his later years becomes the Riddler, has gotten around to killing a man from the GCPD, killing his girlfriend, to killing another cop, then to frame Jim, then getting Jim thrown into prison and putting a bomb at a station. Jim and Nygma had an amazing moment before Ed was arrested. In the episode "Into the Woods," Jim follows Nygma into the woods with cops behind trees. He has a line I think one day will be a very famous one "How'd you become this?" Then has another riddle in which the answer is death. We feel how Jim was betrayed and framed by Nygma. It tore me apart when he held Jim at gunpoint in that chilly scene with the snow covered forest.
The young Jim Gordan in "Gotham" is just like any other humble guy whose moral compass is unshakable. But Jim has had to adapt to the brutality of this city called Gotham. With his ex-girlfriend becoming insane, to shooting a newly elected major in cold blood, to using brass knuckles and a 26-inch expanding baton (yes, I researched). He is definitely a force to be reckoned with. His nickname is "Boy Scout" because when it comes down to it, Jim Gordan will always take the high road--even when he has the chance to kill a soon to be high-status criminal who will continue to be a problem with Jim.
With characters like Copperhead whose character was in the game "Batman: Arkham Origins," outsmarting Jim and creating a name for herself with betraying Galavan who then is confronted by Jim, Harvy, Cobblepot, and company. This lead to the events of his cold dark death by the hands of Jim Gordan.
This show is a monster with how they treat their characters, and what they go through in their arch.
