Why Going To College Far From Home Is Great

College is the place we choose to spend the last four years before adulthood, so why not live it up far from home?

Going to college is the point in everyone's life where we finally get the opportunity to learn what we want to learn, make new friends and see changes all while experiencing life outside of high school. College is a place you get to choose, so go big or go home am I right? There's so many pros to staying close to home, but I also believe there is so many pros to being far away, which is why I chose to start my new life a thousand miles away from home. Here is why it's acceptable and exciting to go to college far away:

1. New Scenery

Some of us grow up in a small town while others grow up in the big city, the ones the townies fall in love with in every movie. No matter where our comfort place is, aka home, we all seek adventure in some way. What better way is there then to live the best four years of your life experiencing the adventure of a new town, state or country? New scenery can be refreshing and open up your eyes about the perspective of the world and how people outside of your community live!

2. New Start

High school can either go really bad or really good for some people. For those who believe that that stage has had a negative impact on them, going to a school far away can open up so many doors that weren't present before. Nobody knows you, nobody knows your past and nobody really cares about what happened during high school. Being 1,000 miles away from the past means you can be a completely different person and start over, writing a new story line for your previously written book. Even if high school was an amazing time, everyone could use the new start to learn how to deal with a completely different environment and how to make the best out of it!

3. Independence

Although staying close to home and having family there is wonderful, sometimes we all just need a little me-time. Exploring the world and living life without the everyday adults we've been around for 18+ years increases so much by being far away. Sometimes you just want to feel like you're controlling your own destiny and you want to make your own decisions, something that is needed when going so far from home. Although every college student, no matter where they go to school, has independence and no adults, being far away means your not "just a call away" from mom anymore and it's a wake up call about growing up. Missing your family, friends and pets is common for being so far away and honestly will suck, but it just makes you appreciate those things in life so much more!

4. Less Worrying

Dropping everything and needing to adapt to a new environment can be hard sometimes, but attending a college a great distance from home relieves stress about problems central to home.Things happen, whether it's with family, friends or life in general, something always happens that wishes you didn't have to deal with it. Traveling far away to study helps relieve the stress regarding all those every day disturbances. This break from normal life at home is so relieving and honestly every one needs to experience not needing to care about the irregular things that seem so relevant.

5. Make Everyone Jealous

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
