Most people, me included, think of a movie like legally blonde when the word sorority is brought up. However, in my experience, it is much different than that.

I am in Alpha Sigma Alpha at Roanoke College and I can hands down it was the best decision I have made. I was the type who didn't go out, who didn't really socialize as much. My living situation at the time was miserable and I wanted to leave. However, my mother convinced me to rush and running home was the best decision I could have made.

Alpha Sigma Alpha develops women of poise and purpose and I have learned so much about myself since I have been there. I learned to not judge people based on first appearances, and I learned that it is okay to open up to people. I have hated telling people that I have anxiety because I am scared that it will alter their perspective of me, but with the sisters, I have directly told they just embrace me and make me feel at home. They accept me for me and that is something I can say has never happened before.

So, if you are considering rushing, here are 5 reasons why you should run home.

1: You'll find a place you get to call home, with girls you'll grow lifelong relationships with.

My pledge class is the best in the world and I love how we all have different personalities and come from different backgrounds. I know that I can count on them, and they can count on me.

2: BIG LITTLE WEEK.

Okay, who doesn't love being showered with gifts? Big little week was the most exciting time of my college life because this person is giving you handmade gifts and the consideration was enough to bring me to tears at certain points.

3: You get pushed to do things outside of your comfort zone.

I would have never socialized this much and gotten over as many anxious tendencies as I have with this group of amazing girls. They help me grow and realize my full potential.

4: Not only do you get to meet a bunch of amazing girls, but you get to help people while doing it.

I am personally involved with 4 philanthropies and I could not have been happier with it. Recently, we made posters and helped out with Girls on the Run. We decorated girls hair, put tutus on them, and showed them where to run. However, the most exciting part was seeing the confidence instilled in these amazing girls.

5: You'll have the time of your life.

Whether it's late night Disney movies, or crying on someone's shoulder, being the shoulder to cry on, or running to sheets at 1 am, you'll find your home.

I have had the time of my life running home to ASA. I could not imagine my life any other way. No matter what may be happening, give rushing a try! You never know, maybe you'll find a home as great as mine.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
