Why Girls Think Chivalry Is Dead

Although it may be dying, it's NOT dead.

As a guy one of the most frustrating things I hear on a frequent basis is a girl saying chivalry is dead. What exactly is meant by this? Does this mean there are no good guys left out there? Or maybe that being a good guy is an old-fashioned thing of the past? If that’s the case, I know plenty of great guys out there that have chivalric traits that any girl would be lucky to have in her life. Yes, I will be the first to agree that chivalry is dying; however, it is NOT dead. With that said, I present to you a few reasons why it may seem as if chivalry is dead when it really isn’t.

1. Thank You, Society

As cliché as it may sound, today’s society plays a role in this. Why the shift from a modern gentleman to jerk has been so drastic in society puzzles me just as much as you but being disrespectful seems to be accepted as the norm far too often anymore. Whether it comes from movies or the old saying about good guys finishing last, the societal pressure for guys to act this way is a legitimate variable in the big picture of it all. Good guys finishing last seems to happen far too often.

2. Girls Have A "Type"

This may be controversial buts it’s undeniable. This is where I have the biggest problem when girls say chivalry is dead because they deserve some responsibility for this feeling. The cold, hard truth about many girls is they have a type that they are attracted to and more often than not, that “type” is not the kind of gentleman that lives his life in a chivalric way. This drives the good guys in your life that are willing to make an effort crazy, I promise you that.

So rather than having on type of guy you are attracted to, how about opening your eyes to the possibilities instead of sticking with the same thing. I mean chances are if you are one of the girls saying chivalry is dead then you have only dated jerks your entire life. Maybe it’s not so much that chivalry is dead but rather that it’s about time to start giving different kinds of guys an opportunity to wow you and go above and beyond to treat you how you want to be treated.

3. Some Guys Are Just Jerks

There is no way around it, there are a multitude of guys out there that are just jerks. Either they are only looking to hook up or really could care less about treating a girl how she deserves to be treated. These are the guys that give the rest of us a bad reputation. Chances are, these kinds of guys are likely never going to change so why waste your time?

Although it may be dying, chivalry is not dead and if you are one of the girls that have said this before, I challenge you to try something different for once. Go for a different kind of guy you may not have always been interested in because your current attractions obviously are not working out. But I do promise you all, chivalry is still alive and waiting for the opportunity to reveal itself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
