5 Reasons Girls Should Weightlift

Weightlifting isn’t just for those muscleheads at the gym who want to rip through their shirts. Girls who weightlift have strong, toned bodies…and don’t need help carrying groceries.

5 Reasons Girls Should Weightlift

1. Cardio is not the secret to burning calories.

The more muscle you have, the more calories your body will burn every day. If you just do cardio day-in and day-out, you’re not building any new muscle, and your metabolic rate will pretty much stay the same. After a day of strength training though, your body continues to consume oxygen for hours and even days afterward. Consuming more oxygen means burning more calories and increasing your metabolic rate.

2. Because curves are sexy.

Not all girls who lift have "crazy" hulk bodies. In actuality, women who weightlift love showing off firm butts (thanks, squats) and a nice chest too (thanks, bench). Lifting creates and sustains muscles that can give your body some really nice curves.

3. You'll get a better night’s sleep.

Weight training leads to a longer, deeper night’s sleep with less waking up in between. If you have problems with insomnia, try getting into strength training. You might see a huge difference in the quality of your sleep.

4. It helps you maintain strong bones and a healthy heart.

As women age, we are more prone to muscle and bone mass loss. Weightlifting prevents osteoporosis and strengthens your bones. The earlier you pick up some weights, the higher the chance you have to maintain healthy bones later in life. Pumping iron is even a recommended form of exercise from the American Heart Association for those at risk for heart disease.

5. You'll feel more confident about yourself.

Weightlifting requires a lot of discipline and challenges your body physically and mentally. As you see yourself picking up heavier weights each week, you’ll have a higher appreciation for the hard work you put into making your body healthier and stronger. There isn’t an excuse when you can get in shape, look great, be healthy, and most importantly, feel more positive about yourself and life in general.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
