Let's face it: being a girl is expensive.
It takes a lot to look presentable each day, and we don't just want to buy clothes from Walmart or makeup from Walgreen's. No. We want that premium Kylie Jenner lipstick and that trip to Sephora (which, if you're like me, cry when you see the total on your receipt).
However, some girls have found a hack to getting all this over-priced makeup for free. Yeah, you read right. But the way they are getting it is not something you would want to brag about on Instagram.
If you look up "dumpster diving haul" on YouTube, you'll find hundreds of videos of girls going to Sephora or Ulta dumpsters and finding from $500 to $5,000 worth of high-end makeup. Now, you're thinking that some of these products are old testers or have been used. But most of these YouTubers report that they have special precautions when picking things. For example, one YouTuber by the name of Shelbizleee says that she never uses any liquid lipsticks, or anything that could possibly have been used by many people and not been sanitized. She always wears gloves and uses hand sanitizer constantly.
Let me point out that dumpster diving is in fact not illegal in the U.S., unless otherwise stated by local provisions, or by trespassing signs. Also, consumerism in this country is not always environmentally efficient, and many of these girls are activists who see the wrong in throwing out perfectly good product to just rot in a landfill. It also appeals to the average college girl's wallet, which doesn't have much room for expensive makeup. Also, many girls are not using the makeup for themselves, but in fact selling it online for profit. Some have even turned dumpster diving into a part-time job.
So I'm not here to promote dumpster diving, but just to inform you on how girls are cheating the system. So if you decide to try this out, please be safe. There are many guides out there on Google that give tips on how to be safe, such as looking out for glass and carrying pepper spray. Trust me, young girls are not the only ones looking for goodies in the garbage.
