Gilmore Girls is one of those rare shows that comes around and touches the heart and souls of all its viewers. You become so emotionally invested in the characters and in each one of their stories that you feel you are connected to them somehow. It’s a show that encompasses many powerful aspects that pertain to real life problems and is so heartwarming and playful that anyone and everyone can find some piece of themselves in it. It shares so many important messages, emphasizes the significance of the family bond, growing up, and how life can affect anyone any age.
The show contains seven seasons compiled with at least twenty episodes each season. And the best news yet is they are making more episodes of a brand new eighth season being released on November 25, 2016! It will contain four new episodes all approximately an hour and a half long to satisfy the whole season of the year it is dedicated to. I have learned a plethora of lessons about life through the Gilmore Girls, whether it is to appreciate certain people, little things about your small town, or just how precious family time and being a young, learning, and growing person is. Here are some things I learned from the show and things that I learned to appreciate from watching Lorelai and Rory grow to experiencing my own life start to shape itself.
Life can be just as complicated as Lorelai and Rory’s gets.
But the great thing about that is that it’s such a real show, you need to see all of the themes the show encompasses because it replicates real life so well. There’s relationships, family, growing up, college, growing apart, getting closer, finding yourself.
Life can also be just as spectacular, happy, and warm and fuzzy.
Even if it is not the best situation, the girls just make the most of the fact they have each other, they are best friends and they have a sense of humor. So even if something is not ideal, it is manageable through all the ups and downs with each other. And all of those magnificently, wonderful, fluffy warm moments are worth all the not so fluffy ones.
You learn that sometimes you just need to grab your mom, find a good movie, and too many snacks because it’s just that sort of night.
Lorelai and Rory often have their “thing” where they can make any activity an event. Ex. Bringing popcorn to a town meeting, ordering massive amounts of take out and pizza and watching movies all night, and running to Doose’s Market to grab some extra snacks for when they need a few extra Poptarts. They are known for their ability to eat massive amounts of food (generally unhealthy) and staying tiny and making any occasion one worthy of plentiful enjoyment even if it is something rather boring.
Humor is such a good thing.
Emily Gilmore can be perceived as how you act if you take life too seriously while Lorelai’s constantly goofy demeanor and remarks is just a reminder that you’re supposed to laugh at life sometimes.
It’s okay to get lost and not know what you’re doing.
This happens to everyone. Everyone in the show. Everyone in real life. Everyone. Rory’s path shifts, Lorelai makes tough decisions and changes her course, most don’t know what they’re doing with their lives, and that is completely reflective of reality. Not many people know what they are doing. And that is okay. I learned from this show that you do not need to know, that it will come to you.
Your loved ones are the most important people.
In the show, family is emphasized. Even people who are not directly blood-related can be family. The mother-daughter bond is so strong between Lorelai and Rory and is so comforting to watch, especially with your mother.
Laugh at yourself.
One of the best themes in the show is Lorelai and Rory’s incessant humorous remarks whether towards each other, other people, or themselves. Their personalities are so contagiously delightful, fun, playful, and energetic (they talk extremely fast in the show due to quick wit), which makes their humor infectious. They are hardly every serious, especially towards themselves and it is a good trait to practice.
Enjoy coffee, books and old movies.
One thing the characters are proudly obsessed with is coffee. Rory lives and breathes literature and wants to be a journalist. And a lot of times, the girls’ movie and munchies nights contain old, classic films and shows that they thoroughly enjoy, despite having seen so many times to the point of memorization.
Appreciate your little town even if it’s not Stars Hollow.
Stars Hollow is unfortunately not a real place, but anywhere can be a Stars Hollow.
Growing up is optional.
The characters keep their light-hearted, upbeat spirit high despite age. Their spirit is uplifting.
Life does not go according to plan. And that’s okay.
We learn that in the show and in real life that everything will be okay in the end. Now you just have to watch it. So grab some tea/coffee/beverage of choice and some snacks, a friend/parent/ or a pillow or two and start experiencing the magic that is Gilmore Girls.
