In college, your life is hectic and for the most part you have only had to take care of yourself. Most of us are by no means ready to have children, not to mention, we are basically children ourselves. Of course, when I see dogs I immediately run up to the and give them love because let's face it, nothing beats some good 'ole puppy love. So, I came up with this out of this world idea, I'm going to get a dog. When I first got my puppy, my family called me crazy. They said, "You have no idea what you are getting yourself into!" and "You do not even have time for a dog!". As much as I hate to admit it, they were partially correct.
Never ever did I expect a puppy to be so much work. Usually you think you just give them food and water and take them out to exercise and that is it. Boy, was I off... I left my my pup alone for not even two hours in a whole room to herself with enough toys that after five minutes of her chewing on one she could go to another and have enough to swap around to till I got back. I pulled into my front driveway and right off the bat I saw the blinds chewed off and I was not even in the house yet. When I walk in the room, words could not describe the terror. There were paw prints on the wall where she stepped in her poop and decided to give the wall some smelly decorations and the carpet was torn up by the door from her clawing at it like a cat. Did I mention this was my second day in the apartment?..
As much as I wanted to kill her, she made me open up my eyes. Yes, she might have just done some serious damage to my apartment, but one day of tears does not come close to the amount of days she has me on the floor laughing. Puppies are like children, they can not take care of themselves and need unbelievable amounts of attention and training. A puppy teaches you that you need to put them before yourself. They whine when they do not get their way and need a bath consistently because the mud looks more fun then staying clean. Sounds a lot like a child, right?
Although, a puppy isn't nearly as much as taking care of a child, it is just as rewarding. They are teaching you a fraction of what parenting is like. When you raise a pup, they look up to you like you are the world to them and that's because you are. They know when we are upset, and in college we all know that is more times than none. There is nothing more heartwarming then having those puppy kisses wipe up your tears. They become your best friend and suddenly they are going everywhere with you. Then you begin to wonder how you ever lived with out them.
Plus, who could say no to that face?
