Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Monica, Joey, and Phoebe have withstood the test of time since
"Friends" went off the air in 2004. We watch and re-watch every season on Netflix, post pictures and quotes from the show on our social media, and quote all the witty one-liners from the glorious 10 seasons of this timeless show. There's a reason that few shows have gathered a following the way "Friends" has.
It dealt with real issues, but not in a way that pissed anyone off. In 10 seasons, "Friends" touched on gay marriage, infidelity, divorce (thanks, Ross), suicide, love, infertility, job issues and everything in between. However, none of these issues were addressed in a way that made people angry or made them feel like the issues were being shoved down their throats. These issues were addressed with a blend of humor and earnestness.
The gang actually talked to each other. "Friends" came before the introduction of smartphones, meaning that at Central Perk, everyone would talk to each other as opposed to staring at their phones. It's hard to have a conversation nowadays that isn't interrupted by a notification on someone's iPhone.
There were all types of people in the group. Monica is the neurotic overachiever. Ross is the super smart boy next door. Phoebe is...out there. Joey is the not too smart, but still a sweet flirt. Rachel is the typical popular girl and Chandler is the lovable dork. Anyone who watches "Friends" can see themselves in one, or all of the characters.
Finally, let's not forget that theme song, which is without a doubt the most uplifting song ever. "So no one told you life was gonna be this wayyyy." You're right, no one told me life was gonna be this way, so I'm gonna play this theme song on repeat until I feel better about it.
Honestly, how many shows are there that has reached so many people, of so many different backgrounds and brought them together at a little coffee shop? "Friends" has withstood the test of time. Although when "Friends" took place, the world was free of the social media and smartphones that seem to rule our lives. We still find comfort in watching that fun group of friends on our smartphones for a little escape from day to day life, wishing we could be hanging out with them on that couch at Central Perk back in the 90's.
