When it comes to a good weekend breakfast, there are certain staples that exist. Some are non-replaceable. Eggs, biscuits, fruit, bacon, sausage, etc. Yet, on the center stage, we find three different main items: pancakes, waffles, and the king, French toast. Why is French toast the best? Simply because it is the best tasting! It can have as many varieties as any pancake or waffle but in more textures and better general flavor. This is not to say that I dislike the other two choices, but if I have an option, French toast is always it.
To understand why French toast is the best option, let’s look at what goes into making each one of the breakfast champions. Waffles and pancakes are made from essentially the same batter, which is itself little more than flour, egg, and water. What makes these options delicious is literally only the toppings one decides to put on them, and they serve this purpose well because they are tasteless. Now, French toast is different in that it is an egg, milk, and cinnamon bath that is first soaked into bread and then cooked out. More flavorful? Certainly.
When it comes to variety, French toast has a massive advantage. It can have all of the toppings of its compatriots, as well as the classic blueberry and chocolate chip varieties. Yet the final nail in the coffin for the other two competitors here is that French toast can be made from literally any bread. White bread, wheat bread (I don’t know why you would, but you can), banana bread, sourdough (better than you would expect), cinnamon bread, and raisin bread. Of course, there are more, but I think I have made my point there.
Of all of the varieties of French toast out there, though, one reigns supreme. This is French toast made from pound cake. Almond pound cake, in particular. Why does this make such good French toast? For one, it is already delicious. The batter adds to the already dense and moist texture of the pound cake, and you get something even better. Trust me, until you have tried this type of French toast, you have not lived. It is so good; it needs no toppings. In fact, toppings will probably lead to cardiac arrest. It did for me.
There you have it. The true breakfast king has been brought to light, even though some would prefer to not even mention him. The sheer variety of options when it comes to French toast is staggering, to say nothing of its superior recipe, and the fact that you cannot mess it up on the griddle like a pancake, or have it stick to a waffle iron. French toast wins for me, and the moment you try the pound cake option, it will win for you too. So what are you waiting for? Time for second breakfast!
