Why Finding My Roommate Was The Luckiest Moment Of My Life

I will be eternally grateful that I plucked up the courage to talk to the friendly looking girl that I ran into in the theatre building on admitted students day. She’s one of my best friends, and better than any random roommate I could’ve gotten.

1. We’re both messy

I didn’t think I’d ever be able to find someone that could handle living with me, but she proved that it’s possible to accept how gross our room was 99% of the time. We basically only cleaned if we were having friends over (or if our parents were visiting).

2. She stays up late to talk with me

My favorite memories of my first year of college are all of laying in my bed and talking to my roommate in her bed until we were too tired to keep our eyes open anymore.

3. Our biggest talents are napping and eating

We both love snacking and sleeping in excessive amounts, often did them together, and never judged each other regardless of how much we indulged (even when the number of cheese sticks I'd eaten in one day reached the double digits).

4. She didn’t want to decorate our room symmetrically

The idea of buying matching bedding and all matching decor, and probably at least one thing with either our monogram or the outline of our home state terrifies me. Luckily my roommate felt the same, and we decorated our sides the way we wanted to.

5. We made other best friends together

We‘re so similar that it was really easy for us to connect with the same people, and form great groups of friends that we both fit into. Plus, we needed a third best friend to motivate us/yell at us to do things like working out or studying.

6. She makes me laugh harder than anyone else

It’s a really great idea to pick a roommate that’s going into comedic writing as her career. She kept me laughing the whole year, and I don’t think I’ll ever have so many inside jokes with anyone else.

7. She lets me post embarrassing pictures of her on my snap story

She might have complained a little bit, but she let it happen.

8. She doesn’t complain if I get her sick

Basically every time I got a cold she would get it a week later, and she never got mad at me for it.

9. She’s as codependent as I am

We were joined at the hip to the point that most people weren’t sure which of us was Lillie and which was Olivia. We’ve intentionally taken the same classes, gone to dinner twice so that we could eat dinner together, bought a lot of matching clothes, and taken showers at the same time among other things.

10. She waits up for me if I get home late

We joke about being each other’s parent at school, but it’s really not that much of a joke.

11. She knows everything about me

She knows all of my secrets, and hasn’t been judgmental about a single one. She knows and understands me so well that it freaks me out sometimes. To a fault she can always predict how I’m going to react or what I’m going to say.

12. She’s my favorite person in the world

We talk everyday and I can’t imagine college or my life without her. I was so so incredibly lucky to meet her, and she’s the biggest reason I’m excited to get back to school.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
