1. You feel inclined to dress well all the time.
Remember those days in high school when you walked in feeling confident and excited because you got a new outfit? Well, at FIT there is a subtle pressure to look that nice every. single. day. I mean, if students at the FASHION Institute of Technology don’t look good, who will? Iowa Community College doesn’t have the same pressure.
2. Commuters.
Commuters have all the time in the world to choose their outfits. They can outfit repeat, they don’t have to deal with the frustration of forgetting to bring a pair of boots to school, or that grey sweater. Basically, commuters have the world at their fingertips...They just don't have a place to stay on campus, which can be rough.
3. Overwhelming amount of girls in stilettos.
The overwhelming stiletto-wearing population at FIT can make me feel terribly underdressed. Coming from a girl that owns about 10 pairs of vans and prefers sneakers to heels any night of the week, feeling underdressed follows me everywhere, even while going to a four-hour class on navigating Microsoft Word.
4. The constant questioning from an outsider if you will "make them clothes when you're famous"
I go to fashion school. I'm not a fashion design major.
5. Let me know if you find a straight boy around.
I’ll just leave that there.
6. All of a sudden your "small-town wardrobe" isn’t going to cut it.
Scenario: We’re going to Brooklyn at 8, but we live in Manhattan. We might take a picture that ends up on Instagram in Brooklyn. We have to throw away our entire Manhattan wardrobe and start over!!!! (Really)
7. Somehow, there are photoshoots going on all the time.
Besides carefully looking not to get hit by a cab, I’m cautiously making sure to avoid walking into someone’s photoshoot on campus.
8. The FIT dining hall is not your average school cafeteria.
Scenario: It’s 1:30PM, you just woke up after a long night, and you want to get brunch before the dining hall closes at 2PM. Now, you somehow have to turn yourself into Serena van der Woodsen on her wedding day before you can go get food.
9. Constantly overwhelmed by the endless styles I am surrounded with.
Scenario: I walk into class, and see a girl dressed in all black, wearing a leather jacket and red lipstick, and suddenly I spend all class wanting to ride on the back of a motorcycle wearing her exact outfit. The problem is, the next day I’m also going to want to wear French braids with my glasses, and sport that book-worm chic look; and the cycle continues.
10. What’s in style? Whatever is going to stay in style long enough that it’s worth me buying.
Superstars are very overdone. Knee high gladiator sandals needed to go years ago, and the phrase, “I’m so triggered right now” better not last. Thigh high suede boots on the other hand, I NEED.
