Why I Love Thanksgiving

A time to give thanks, be happy, and be together

Why I Love Thanksgiving

Since Thanksgiving break begins next week for students across the world, I thought it was applicable to discuss the reasons why I look forward to this time of year. My family has always referred to Thanksgiving as a time of year where we all come together to be thankful of what we have. Although the past week have not been the easiest for everyone, a celebration like Thanksgiving may be exactly what everyone needs to look at what they can feel content about in their lives.

The end of November can be defined by smell of pumpkin pie baking in the oven, the juicy turkey cooking all day, and the laughter of family members filling up the house. Thanksgiving is primarily a time where family can come together and enjoy each other’s presence. This is one of my favorite parts of the time of year, since I do not always see my extended family during other holidays throughout the year. Whether someone goes home or not for Thanksgiving break, the break can be a time to celebrate life and happiness with loved ones, whether the loved ones are friends or family.

Thanksgiving is a day to spend time with each other, whether it is through cooking, watching football, or just talking to one another. I love cooking with my family on Thanksgiving Day because of how much fun it ends up being. We get to enjoy each other’s company, make food to share with the rest of the family, and celebrate the act of giving thanks by being grateful for the food that we have made.

Lastly, Thanksgiving is first and foremost a time to relax and take a break from the stress that is associated with school and work. Although there is a certain hustle and bustle that is related to Thanksgiving, the tasks that need to be done are more “fun” so to speak, since they could include cooking, baking, traveling to family’s homes, and overall planning a happy yet restful day to spend with loved ones. (And, do not forget the movie marathons and Friendsgiving celebrations that can be a fun and unforgettable part of your holiday).

For some, the day of Thanksgiving can be one to stress and worry about, since there are so many aspects to figure out before everyone can sit down for the food-coma-inducing meal. But, what everyone needs to remember is what Thanksgiving is all about: being with loved ones. There are many people in this world who do not get a Thanksgiving meal, and who do not get to spend the day with loved ones. So, whether you are in your home or are 1,000 miles away, be content about where you are on Thanksgiving, since many individuals do not have the chance to have a Thanksgiving meal or anyone to spend the day with.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
