If you ask anyone, they'll probably admit that the strangest, most contradictory stage of their life was when they were in their twenties. For starters, the term "young adult" isn't exactly clear. You know, that time when you're young enough to still get away with acting like a kid, yet old enough that you're simultaneously expected to live like an adult? Although this decade often entails a great deal of confusion, it is also filled with fun memories, rewarding changes and endless discoveries.
What could be better than experiencing all that soul searching, mistake and memory making, while living in the daily hustle-and-bustle of New York City? Nothing.
New York makes you tough.
The lack of consideration and compassion for others does not go unnoticed. However, one day you'll thank that crazy entitled boss, overbearing neighbor and accosting stranger. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
No two days are are identical to another.
There's inspiration on every corner, in every jam-packed subway car and person that you meet. Every day is filled with an endless amount of opportunity.
You're forced to grow up quickly.
In a fast-paced city, you have to learn to sacrifice in exchange for the perks of a metropolis. You become a professional at managing your time and money. Although a reality check doesn't exactly pay your rent, it's incredibly rewarding.
The endless amount of bottomless brunches, rooftops and bars to escape to after a long week (or month).
When your stress-relief doesn't include your couch, a sappy chick flick and a bottle of cheap wine, it's easy to always be meeting new people and discovering new places. The mimosa pitchers constantly being offered are just an added bonus.
There is never a dull moment.
It's the city that never sleeps. With a population of eight million people and counting, it's hard to be bored, even at three a.m. during the middle of the week. There's always room for new appreciations when you live on the inside of a melting pot.
It's close proximity to other places.
Although there's nothing like NYC, it's easy to feel suffocated by the rat-infested, overpopulated subways and city streets. When a weekend getaway is necessary or overdue, the LIRR, NJ Transit and Amtrak quickly come in handy.
Once you've made it here, you can make it anywhere.
Nothing is as hard, as miserable, but also as rewarding as braving the daily battle of life in The City. Cheers to lots and lots of black coffee and preparation for whatever, whoever and wherever life takes you next!
