Naps. We all take them, and we all know what they are. As college students, however, a newfound appreciation for naps has emerged, one we did not have when we were in high school. Though we all understand the complexity and necessity of naps, we need to take action on this knowledge in college, and this is why.
Naps are the foundation of our lives at college. You might disagree, but internally, you know that all you can think about in class sometimes is how much you want to fall into your bed, snuggle into your covers, and sleep the day away. You know you want to change into your pjs, turn off the lights, and play Netflix while you nap. Naps, defined by various dictionaries, are “a short sleep, especially during the day." Though this definition does specify that you nap during the day, naps are not exclusively limited to the hours of light. Essentially, you could nap at whatever time you want.

In college, the traditional definition of napping changes. You have your naps that may be an hour or so, and then you have extended naps, which could just be defined as going to bed. Why do I say extended naps? Well, because of the amount of work we have to do at university, we are kept busy so much that we might not have time for a full night of rest, so we just “extend” our naps. Simple, don’t you think?
As a wise friend once told me, “naps are vital to success," and I definitely agree. Without naps, where would we be in university? Too tired to go to class, Snell, or do any other activity that requires energy. When we’re feeling down, or just want a bit of a rest, what do we do? We nap. When we want to be alone for a while, what do we do? We nap. Why do we need to nap more in college? Because, ladies and gentlemen, it gives us the break from reality and the pressure of school that us freshmen are already facing.
Upperclassmen say that naps legitimately save them sometimes. My friends with grueling majors such as engineering and chemistry say that without naps, they’d definitely be suffering in their schoolwork. As freshmen, we’re already daunted by the change in difficulty and amount of work we’re being given compared to that of high school.
Frankly, I used to be against the concept of napping in college because I thought it was a waste of the day. However, after letting myself take some, I’ve realized that they’re more vital to our existence as college students than we’ve ever thought before.
So ladies and gentlemen, do yourselves a favor and take more naps. Whether for 20 minutes or two hours, rest a little bit more because you’ll definitely be more energized in the long run.
