Why Everyone Should Make TheSkimm Part Of Their Daily Routine

Be honest for a second...when was the last time you picked up a newspaper or watched the morning news? What if I told you that there is a quick and easy way to stay up to date on current events and world news without doing either...

Fact: The highlight of my day occurs at approximately 6:40 each morning, before I am even awake, when an email from theSkimm lands in my inbox.

Confession: I set the alarm on my iPhone five minutes early so that I can lay in my bed and read theSkimm. After my alarm rings and I scroll through my inbox (hoping for class cancellation email) is the first email I always read is from the daily Skimm.

theSkimm is a free daily online newsletter, which is distributed through email each morning to more than 500,000 subscribers and is continuing to grow. Each edition follows a similar format: they begin with a quote of the day and a "skimm'd while..." and often include segments like a popular story, repeat after me, things to know, and what people are talking about. Its short, sweet, and to the point, fitting perfectly into the busy lives of millennials.

In 2012 Founders Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg resigned from their news producer positions at CNN and decided to launch their own network. Their approach focuses on a convenient way to read and understand hot topics in the news. In just four short years this network has grown tremendously and has proud supporters like Sarah Jessica Parker, Oprah, and Michelle Obama.

So...why should you read the daily Skimm?

1. theSkimm is onehundo-p free!!

That's right folks, you'll never pay a dime to read the daily Skimm. Subscribers even have the chance to earn rewards by becoming a Skimm'bassador (aka recruiting new subscribers). The more people you recruit, the more swag you earn...think t-shirts, tote bags, stickers, etc.

2. It it's as easy as apple pie!

theSkimm gets delivered to your inbox Monday-Friday (hallelujah, weekends off) and you never have to access the main website, unless you want to. The newsletter is always contained in the body of the email. You can read theSkimm virtually anywhere..a train, a plane, the car... one time I read theSkimm at the top of an active volcano in Santorini, Greece. (True Story).

3. Short, sweet, and to the point.

Don't waste your time combing through news sites, searching for a story of your interest. The most newsworthy happenings that you need to know are conveniently broken down and summarized. There are links to full stories if you want to read further into a specific topic. Look at that...efficient.

4. theSkimm is wittier than I am...and I am pretty witty...

Example: theSkimm for March 28th..."skimm'd with the final four and candy...lots of candy" "QUOTE OF THE DAY: 'Somebody pushed me over and take my eggs and it's very rude' -4-year-old Vincent Welch. Over the weekend, PEZ was forced to cancel its annual Easter egg hunt because some parents just couldn't play nicely with others and share." So tell me... do you sense the saddle hints of sass in this statement? Personally, I love it and there are quotes like this every day!

5. If theSkimm was a person, they would be the coolest person I know.

Let's face it, I wish I was clever enough to come up with this genius idea. theSkimm is relatable, chic, understood, and entertaining. People love to read theSkimm because they understand what is being said. They explain the meaning of "bae" and skim the perfect wines to pair with your read while breaking down international crises, sports tournaments, and presidential elections. theSkimm might as well be a superhero.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
