5 Reasons Why Everyone Should Be A Band Nerd

It's nothing like Spongebob.

Ever since 5th grade I have been a proud band nerd. No one was surprised that I joined as my older brother had been in band and I had basically worshipped him and his band friends when I was in preschool.

Band has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and knowing it's coming to an end is heartbreaking. I've been reflecting a lot on my band experience lately and have come up with the top 5 reasons everyone should be a band nerd.

1- Playing an instrument makes you smarter

While the research isn't totally complete, evidence is stacking up that suggests musicians have a different brain structure than other people. Certain parts of a musician's brain may be larger such as the parts that control motor skills, hearing, storing audio information and memories.

People that play music may also be able to learn a foreign language faster than non-musicians, although in my opinion band itself should give students foreign language credits considering the amount of Italian words we have learned over the years.

2- We're better kissers

Okay so I might be biased but I'd like to think all the hours of building my embouchure has helped me in this department. According to several internet polls though, band geeks do tend to rank higher in the kissing department, coincidence?

But honestly, band nerds do have to use their lips on a daily basis, often for hours at a time and have built up an ability to hold their breath for long periods of time so...

3- It's a good excuse to travel

My first time ever going to Disneyland was with my high school band and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. While not all bands have the opportunity to do big travels like that, most bands do get to travel around their state for festivals and competitions.

4- We're basically Scientists

A band nerd's favorite game to play is "will it fit?" A game where, well, we see what fits. For example, did you know that a trumpet mouthpiece will fit in place of a tuba mouthpiece? Also, a trumpet can fit into a trombone and a human head will fit into a tuba bell.

Another well known game is "what sound will come out?" Often the answer is "an obnoxious one."

5- Band is family

It's no surprise that the people I see everyday and have traveled all over the West Coast with have become like a second family to me. Playing music together creates an instant connection that we won't have with anyone else.

These people, no matter how annoying they are, have a special place in my heart and they make the thought of leaving so much harder. #BandFamForever

There are countless reasons people should be in band and the reasons are different for everyone. Band is a unique experience full of inside jokes and Spongebob references and I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
