We've all been there. 11:30 PM. A fresh bowl of frosted flakes on your lap. You've spent the last hour browsing Netflix only to realize that there's nothing left to watch. You've seen everything it has to offer. It's not your fault you have such good taste.
I found myself in a similar rut, so I texted my most trusted lady friend begging for a recommendation. She responds, "Watch Girls. Its a great show. It has guy characters too. Like a one to four ratio". I did have a month long HBO trial, and being educated about HBO shows is important nowadays. You never know when knowing about an HBO show will come in handy, like at a job interview or writing a comedic article for The Odyssey.
So I sat down and binge watched all four seasons and I instantly fell in in love with the show. As the title suggests, "Girls" is undeniably based primarily on the female experience. The fear that they would be unable to relate drives a lot of guys away from the show. Imagine if there were a joke that we wouldn't understand. That would be traumatizing.
I'm here to say that every college-aged girl and guy should watch "Girls".
First off, the show is incredibly quotable.
Despite the 1:4 guy-girl ratio, Adam Driver's performance becomes one of the most prominent of the entire series. As a guy, I immediately identified with his character because he wasn't a cheesy, sappy sitcom character, but rather he was a guy who said and did "guy things" and never apologized for it.
For those guys less interested in the show's wit, social commentary, and humor, you can just sit back and fall in love with Allison Williams.
The show does a really great job describing the struggle of twenty-somethings looking for direction and purpose. Often times, moments of humor are followed by extremely relatable dramatic moments.
A lot of the situations the characters find themselves in are so compelling and effective because they are situations that I have been in before. These aren't cheesy TV relationships that make me want to puke. They feel real because they are messy.
Every college-aged person should watch this show. Despite the show centering around the female perspective, the central themes are ones that I can easily identify with despite the fact that I have a penis.
