Why Every Girl Should Compete In A Pageant
Mirissa Scholting

It's been a while since I've written. Mostly because I have had a serious case of writer's block but also because I haven't really been inspired to write anything lately. That is until now.

On Mother's Day I tuned in to the Miss USA pageant and decided to watch until the end to find out who the lucky woman is that is going to be representing women all across America. So this got this me thinking about when I was in a pageant myself and well why I think every girl should be in at least one pageant in her lifetime.

The first reason to be in a pageant is that it gives you a reason to put on a dress and get your hair and makeup done...which is not something you get to do everyday and besides what girl doesn't want to do that. Trust me you will feel beautiful.

The second reason is because I think it gives girls/women a chance to show their personality. I don't know about you but when I got the question, "If you could be a cookie what kind of cookie would you be and why?" I thought to myself, "Yes, this gives me a chance to show who I am, but uh I don't know what I'm going to say." So I made the audience laugh and maybe even made them think about the question themselves and how they would answer. But ultimately, this question got me out of my comfort zone. Everyone should know what that feels like.

The third reason is because it gives you a chance to raise your voice. What I mean by that is whether you're talking about how much you love animals, how your mom is your hero, or your opinion on a certain political topic... you are stating your opinion and raising your voice and besides isn't that what a pageant is all about. Showing people your confidence in who you are and what you believe.

The last reason every girl should be in a pageant is because it gives a girl a chance to compete. Yes the dreadful word "competition" nowadays is frowned upon because no one likes winners anymore and the world thinks that everyone is a winner. Well friends, I can tell you that in a pageant as well as in life itself it is still a competition and whether you win or lose, you learn. So be thankful for both.

All in all, I highly recommend girls all across America to be in a pageant because trust me they are about so much more than beauty and you learn a lot about yourself as well as inspire others.

Oh and always remember this quote: Beauty may be dangerous but intelligence is lethal. -Anonymous

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
