Since I was 6 years old, I remember wanting to be an elementary school teacher. I would always fight with my friends over who got to be "teacher" when we played school. I wanted to be the one passing out the papers, grading their worksheets and standing in front of them writing on my green chalkboard. Of course no child is ever sure of what they want to be when they grow up and it changes everyday but for me, I knew. I would beg to receive the job of "teacher's helper" when it came time to pick jobs in the classroom. I was sure that elementary education was for me but what really made me positive of my career choice was my internship at a local elementary school in a kindergarten classroom. When I told everyone that I was going to be spending the next 3 months in a kindergarten classroom all they could say was "good luck with that".All my classmates were surprised at my career choice because why would I do something that paid little salary, because in high school, it's all about money in the future. Here's a few of the many reasons I want to become an elementary school teacher.
.Everyday is a new day. You are not sitting in a cubicle at the office doing paperwork, you're teaching the future.
.Children are so innocent and provide you with a smile on your face each and every day.
.You get to watch each and every student succeed and progress within the classroom.
.You teach the "building blocks" for the rest of their education such as the ABC's and 123's, writing and reading, basic math.
.Each day you get to walk into a classroom full of energy and the positive attitude to learn and be in school.
.Believe it or not, you learn something new everyday from the children and staff.
.Unlike in jobs within an office, you get to be incredibly creative and show off your inner child.
.You don't have to work with adults all day, it's children with high energy and you never know what to expect from them.
.You feel like you are being helpful to your community by teaching these younger children.
.Each year you get a class full of new friends to meet and new relationships to build.
Each year is different and you never know what to expect from them and that is one of the most valuable parts of this job. So each day when you ask someone why they are pursuing a career in education, remember, they get summers off. Just kidding, remember they are helping society and the children in your own community learn the stepping stones of life. Teachers are important.
