Why We Don't Deserve Dogs
Haley Melvin

Dogs are one of the most popular pets in this day and age, and almost every home has one. However, no one truly seems to understand how inspirational and influencing having a dog in the picture can be. Earth truly doesn't deserve dogs, and yet we have been blessed with their presence since the beginning of time.

They’re the best source of entertainment.

When you’re having a rough day, I’ll be willing to bet that 10 times out of 10 you can cheer yourself up with dogs. You can Google pictures of puppies in Halloween costumes. You can watch military homecoming dog videos on YouTube. You could even go to a neighbor's house or a local shelter and just play with dogs for a few hours. They just have the bubbly personality needed to lift us up when we feel down

It’s all about you.

These creatures are little balls of happiness that spend their entire lives celebrating you. They could be doing anything in the world: rolling around in mud, chewing on the furniture, plotting world domination. Instead, they willingly spend time making you the superior leader of their world.

They’re always there to comfort you.

Have you noticed that when you’re sad a dog always knows before anyone can even ask what’s wrong? They’re on your lap letting you cry into them, and they patiently wait for you to calm down. They’re usually there before anyone even knows you’re upset. And let’s face it: dogs are the best listeners when you just want to complain with no interruption.

They are your biggest fans!

They’re ecstatic and jump for joy when you have a smile on your face. They have no idea what’s going on, but they’re so happy for you! You could stroll up to a dog as they’re taking a nap and just begin to jump up and down in front of them for no reason. They’ll wake up from their nap and join you. They just see that you are happy, and that is enough to pump them up.

They expect nothing in return.

These creatures want nothing but love and friendship in return. They don’t need to be your friend. You could easily just be the “person that feeds them," but they want more than that. They want to develop a friendship and make their entire world about you.

They understand.

If you aren’t a “dog person," you can guarantee that a dog will understand. Although they are not on the same level as humans, dogs just get it. They can sense your emotions (like happiness or sadness), and they can react upon this. Have you ever heard someone say a dog can “smell fear?” Well, this could be true, but that does not necessarily mean they will attack.

They attract the right kind of people.

That’s why dogs tend to lean more toward the humans they can sense are “dog people.” They only want what’s best for you. If you’re scared of them, they sense that and stay away. If you’re all about them and want to hug and play for hours, they’ll lean more toward you. They know where they are wanted. They’re basically the least judgmental friends you’ll ever have.

They are great for your health!

Physically and mentally! If you have to walk a dog every day or play with them for about 20 minutes, that's a good, and fun, workout. Dogs are also known to help people out with depression and anxiety. They can sense mental pain from their owners or any humans surrounding them. That's why service dogs for mental and physical health exist, and they are great at their jobs! Having a fun companion who keeps you healthy is an ideal friend to me.

So what did we do to deserve dogs? I’m not sure, but I’m so thankful they believe we deserve them.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
