Why I Don't Care If You Think I Look Pretty

Why Is There Pressure To Be Pretty?

Why I Don't Care If You Think I Look Pretty

Throughout my few 19 years I have spent as a woman, I have realized that I am expected to be pretty....like all the time.

I am still in awe when someone tells me that I look sick or they asks me if I am sick when I don’t have makeup on. My answer to them, "No I am not sick, I am at the f*cking grocery store picking up my chicken flavored Ramen for the week." I didn't know that aisle 12 was a f*cking fashion runway.

As social media has taken over and the perfect body image is being shoved down our eye sockets, the female population has become more prone to judge one another when we aren't wearing makeup. Some women claim to wear makeup to please men, but I believe as a woman that I wear makeup to compete with other women. I wish I didn’t feel compelled to do so.

Statistics show that “pretty” women get paid more and are more likely to get a job over a “non-pretty” woman. Once again, I am left in awe that my use of make-up determines whether or not I get a job and how much I could get paid. I wonder why this is the way it is…?

Being a woman, I am not allowed to feel pretty or admit that I just might be pretty. It is considered conceited and wrong. But why? I want to look in the mirror and admit to myself that I am beautiful whether I am wearing make-up and meeting society's standards. I want to feel comfortable in my own skin and embrace my natural beauty, but that is so taboo.

You're not allowed to be pretty unless you're a size double zero, with thick hair, big eyes, and full lips. Don't get me wrong, that body is beautiful too, but why isn't mine? I have fought hard to get to the body image that I have today and I don't want to stop where society tells me I have to. I am beautiful in my size 6.

You owe it to yourself to look in the mirror and feel pretty each day, because lets face it, life is hard and you don't need that sh*t. You don't need to paint your face on (unless you want to) every morning to please someone else. Please yourself by sleeping in!

I feel flawless with my fake lashes, but that sh*t just ain't natural. So bottom line, why are we judging each other for it? Own that no make-up look by literally wearing no f*cking make-up! You don’t owe the cashier at the grocery store, or the manager at the gym a cake face.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
