This past week, I donated blood for the sixth time since 2013. I started in high school when I was 16 and eligible with parental consent. At that time in my life, I looked at it as just doing something good and giving back to the community. Getting out of class and having snacks was a perk as well back in high school. Now, I began to realize how many people receive these donations and how much it actually helps others around me. My own Nana receives blood transfusions due to her chronic heart problems and other illnesses. Though she can’t receive my blood type, I still feel like I’m giving back to her in a way that’s saving her life. The transfusions she’s received have been from other generous people that took a little time out of their day to give back and save a life. Those people have saved my Nana’s life many times, and I couldn’t be more thankful for all of them.
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. This simple act of generosity can save up to three lives. With all of the unfortunate events that occur today, just think of all of the lives you can help save. Blood supply in hospitals and trauma areas is always limited and in dire need. You could have a rare blood type and be able to help someone else who is as rare and special as you, and you wouldn’t even know it. If you are eligible to donate blood, find a blood drive near you and save a life today.
