Sometimes You Have One of Those Days and You Just Need a Break

Why Doing Nothing Is So Appealing In This Generation

All over the world, millennials have been taught by their parents to work hard at everything they do. Whether it be school, work, clubs, or internships, kids these days are busy. It has become frowned upon in this society to stop and do nothing, and, yet, many people yearn for the time when they can do nothing.

1. There is Pressure to Always be Doing Something.

No matter where you go, there is always something going on. If you don’t live alone, chances are someone in the house/apartment is playing music or watching TV. If you live alone in an apartment, someone in a neighboring apartment is doing something really loudly. Even if you live alone in a house, chances are that someone in the neighborhood is throwing a party. When it seems that everyone else is continuously going, you feel pressured to do the same.

2. Our World Never Stops/We Have a Long List of Responsibilities.

Many of us are guilty of trying to do too much. As a college student, I am running into this problem. I need an education to get a good job, yet I need a job to pay for my education. On top of working and doing school, I also need to be involved in things, so that I can build my resume. This means that I am doing work and school and internships and school clubs. The list of responsibilities is ever growing and it is very stressful.

3. Technology Constantly Interrupts Our Attention.

We all have that moment where we go online to look up something for a paper, or to turn something in real quick, and start on that major reading assignment. Our intentions are good, but as soon as we see that Facebook icon or better yet the Netflix or YouTube icons, it’s like a switch in our brain flips and three hours later, nothing has been accomplished.

4. Doing Nothing Gives You a Chance to Relax.

Doing nothing gives your brain a chance to take a break. Human brains are not machines, they can’t continue taking in information without resting. Even machines break down from over use.

5. Doing Nothing Allows You to Recharge.

6. Sometimes You Just Don't Know Where to Start.

Doing nothing is appealing because sometimes it’s hard to decide where to even start on that mile long to-do list.

7. Doing Nothing Boosts Creativity.

Doing nothing is appealing because when you finally take a break from all the craziness, you begin to see things differently and this allows your creative juices to begin flowing again.

8. Laziness.

Doing nothing is appealing because as much as we are involved, some of us are really very lazy. We work because we have to and we go to school because we hope to one day make more money and not have to work as hard as others.

9. Enjoyment.

Finally, doing nothing is appealing because it is simply enjoyable. We don’t often have time to do nothing and this luxury is one that should be prized.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
