Why Dogs Often Make Me Happier Than People Do

Dogs have the ability to make you happy when other people just can't.

Why Dogs Often Make Me Happier Than People Do
Abbey Marzen

Imagine this: it has been a long day and you finally come home from work, or school, or whatever it is that you do with your life. People have been screaming at you all day to "do this better" or to "do this differently" and you just want to go to bed. You sit down on the couch, rubbing your temples and thinking of all the ways your day could've gone differently. Suddenly, your dog comes around the corner. He's wagging his tail as fast as the first day he laid eyes on you. He doesn't know that you've had a bad day, but no matter what, he is so excited to see you. Now let me ask you a question: how many people have ever greeted you with as much excitement as your dog has just done?

Dogs have the ability to make people feel better in the areas where other humans can't. They have the impact to make you happy, even on the worst of days. Unconditional love is such a hard thing to come by nowadays, but that is what is so great about dogs. They don't care what gender you are, if you have a bit of a temper, if you're stressed, if you're wealthy or not, or about much else, for that matter. You are everything to them.

Dogs make me happy because, to them, you're the sun in their life. Their world revolves around their basic necessities and you. Raising a dog from a puppy is actually an incredible thing because you get to be with them for their entire lives. This makes saying goodbye for humans that much harder. If you have ever owned a dog, or currently own a dog, you know that your dog is family, and the loss of a dog is very painful. Even if you're fighting with your parents or siblings, your dog will still love you and just be happy that you're around. Dogs pick up the slack where humans are lacking.

We live in a world nowadays where we are constantly being judged by other people. We are judged by strangers, close friends, and even, sometimes, by family. We are judged by appearance so often that sometimes we forget the most important thing about a person, and that is what is on the inside. Dogs, on the other hand, do not and will not ever judge you. They are on the other side of the spectrum for humans. Our first instinct is to judge people, while dogs will just go up to anyone and be excited to meet them. I know that we've all encountered a situation where we are walking and a dog walks by, pulling on their owner's leash and wagging their tail at ground-breaking speeds because they are just so excited to see you. That is a kind of love that people will never be able to achieve.

Dogs fill a void in our lives that humans just can't quite reach. Growing up with a dog is such an amazing experience. While you may not know it then, one day you'll look back on your life and see that your dog's unconditional love is the kind of love that humans should strive for.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
