Why Dogs Are The Best Friends We Could Ever Ask For

I'll admit it, I'm obsessed with my dogs. Okay fine, I'm obsessed with dogs in general.

Since I was a baby, my family has always had more than our fair share of dogs running around the house. What can I say? We have big hearts and we just can't seem to get enough of our little fur-babies. Dogs pretty much rule the roost at our house, or so it seems.

When I was a junior in high school, I adopted the most precious little pit bull puppy you could ever imagine. My parents were a little apprehensive at first, but I was fully aware of the stigma that comes along with the Pit Bull breed, and I had done my research. Still, I knew I wanted to give one of these misunderstood dogs a chance to prove that stigma wrong.

Three and a half years later, adopting Roxie has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. That eighty-pound cuddle-bug has shown me that all dogs are capable of love, regardless of their breed. I'm continually amazed at how dogs prove to be man's best friend.

I think we can all agree that dogs are the ultimate besties. Here are some reasons why:

1. They love us so much.

If there is one thing humans can learn from dogs, it is how to love others fiercely and loyally. No matter how much you love your dog, it always seems like they love you just a little bit more. We mean everything to our dogs, and they want nothing more than for us to love them back. We go out every single day and interact with tons of other people, but our precious pups spend their entire days waiting for us to come home.

I know this is a debated topic among scientists, but in my opinion, there is no way anyone who has ever owned a dog can deny that they love their humans.

2. They make the best partners-in-crime.

Whether its riding in the car or doing homework, Roxie is one of the best companions I could have sitting next to me. She never leaves me hanging, and she never seems bored with me, either. She is especially motivating when we go for a run around the neighborhood, mostly because she's really fast and I have to sprint just to keep up with her.

Dogs make daily activities that could easily get mundane so much more fun. They never let you feel lonely, and they always listen to your problems. As if all that isn't enough, they also happen to make the perfect cuddle-buddy.

3. They are really, really cute.

Having dogs is kind of like having kids. Everyone seems to think their dog is cuter than all the other dogs in the world. The truth is that all dogs are cute. There is just something about those cold little noses and precious paws that melts my heart. And don't even get me started on puppies. There is literally nothing in this world that is cuter.

4. They are honestly really smart.

I don't think dogs get enough credit for their intelligence. Think about it; they can't talk to us, yet they are somehow able to convey all of their emotions to us, and they seem to understand our emotions too. Dogs sense when we are sad, and they always know exactly how to cheer us up. They are even able to learn and identify parts of our language and follow commands. Dogs also have excellent character-judgement, which is something that can't always be said of people.

5. They keep life interesting.

One of the best lessons I have leaned as a doggy-mom is that there is no such thing as a boring day. Dogs are constantly making some type of mess. You never know what you are going to come home to, but you can bet your bottom dollar that you're going to have to clean it up.

Also, dogs never stop demanding your attention; whether it's tug-of-war, fetch, or just relentless snuggling. I can't speak for all dogs, but mine seem to have boundless energy, so there is never a dull moment at my house.

6. They leave paw prints on our hearts forever, even long after they're gone.

A dog is a best friend who we will always cherish. Even though their lives are much shorter than ours, we never forget them. The irrevocable love they show us touches our hearts and reminds us to love others just as intensely. They teach us patience, remind us to enjoy life, and bring out the best in us. Dogs are forever friends.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
