Anxiety is a mental disorder which affects more people than recognized. If you struggle with anxiety then I'm you understand how hard it can be to cope with it, especially in situations where it is very hard to calm yourself down.
Pets, especially dogs, are perfect for bringing much needed comfort during an anxiety attack and here are five reasons why.
1. They will give you all the cuddles.
Dogs love attention. They are so fluffy and comforting never failing to put a smile on your face. I know my dog for one knows nothing about personal space. If he wants to sit right on your lap regardless of his 60+ pound size, he will. So, grab your pup and jump on your bed and let them comfort you.
2. They are always excited to see you.
No matter how long you are gone whether it be five minutes or five hours they are always just as excited to see you. I cannot walk in the door without my dog jumping for excitement ready to greet me. I know that if I come home more anxious than other days I can guarantee I will be met with a welcome home like no other.
3. They will always be there to listen to you.
Sometimes when you're anxious or on edge having someone to talk to or just vent to is important. Your pet would love nothing more than that attention. Having you sit there, pet them, and just talk to is everything to them. Next time you're feeling worked up and anxious grab your dog or cat, snuggle them (if it's a dog), and let your feelings out!
4. They won't judge you.
Unfortunately having anxiety is sometimes portrayed as a negative thing. What people don't realize is that at times it is completely uncontrollable and just seems to appear from nowhere. It's easy for those on the outside to look in and judge for what they don't understand. Your pet will never judge you, nor will they think that you are crazy.
5. During an anxiety attack, they are your best distraction.
During an anxiety attack, it can be very difficult to calm yourself and regulate your emotions, especially if you're by yourself. An animal is perfect for distracting you. They will come cuddle you. *See point 1. Grab their favorite toy and try playing with them. Take them for a walk. I mean, dogs have to go to the bathroom. I know that sometimes it might be hard to get yourself up, but they are there to comfort you. Allow them to help distract you.
There are special certified and registered support animals. They are trained to just know how to handle certain situations that they are in. If that is something that you feel necessary I encourage you to seek out information to make that happen. However, your everyday pets are perfect for times where you may struggle with your anxiety. They will be there to cuddle you first thing in the morning or in the middle of the night.
