Why Dogs are the Best Animal to Have Around.

If you have ever been to pet therapy day during finals week, you will completely understand how true this is!

Those who know me, know that I am obsessed with dogs. Growing up, we did not have pets, unless goldfish and the occasional hermit crab count. My grandparents have always had both dogs and cats and my best friends had dogs, so this is where I went to get my weekly cuddles. So why are dogs so great?

1. Who can resist little doggy kisses and puppy breath?

While some people gag at the thought of a dog licking your face when they are excited to see you, I know that this is how they show their love and affection for their human. When a dog does not try to “kiss” a human, you know that you should look at them a little closer to see what they did to make the dog not trust them.

2. When you need a loyal companion, a dog is always by your side.

Very seldom does a dog hold a grudge against you, and even when they do, it only lasts for a little while. Dogs love you unconditionally and don’t care if you are short, tall, skinny, fat, ugly, or pretty. They will follow you to the end of the Earth and back, just to be by your side.

3. They can sense when you need a hug, and will cuddle close when you have had a bad day.

Dogs are the best cuddlers. They sit close with their head on your lap, and just love you. I love when my grandmother’s dog, Dude, lays his head on the pillow next to me, and nudges me to pet him.

4. They are a constant exercise partner.

For the most part, any time you want to exercise, a dog is right there with you. Sometimes they get in the way, like when you are running through the park and that perfect guys runs by right when the dog’s leash gets tangled in your feet. But usually, they will run with you, do push-ups, and are always ready to play some ball.

5. Dogs are great stress relievers.

Have you ever noticed that around finals, your college puts up flyers about therapy dogs in the library? These dogs are brought in to relieve stress, and they are great at their job. Having a chance for these cute little guys to let you love on them causes all of the stress of finals to leave and a feeling of calm to come over you. Massages are great, but puppies are even better.

Puppies, small dogs, large dogs, miniature dogs, long-haired dogs, short-haired dogs, black, white, tan, brown, gray, or red…no matter the kind or which is your favorite, they are all the best buddy a person can have. They are not just man’s best friend, but woman’s best friend also. Everyone should spend some quality time with a dog at some point in their life. You will have a lifetime, loyal companion.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
