Call me a Marvel fanboy, but those guys know how to make good blockbusters. Even their lesser movies like "Thor: The Dark World" and "The Incredible Hulk" are just "okay," and their good ones like "Iron Man" or "The Avengers" are absolutely amazing. It took me a while to make time to watch "Doctor Strange," but I can say that I'm very happy with the results.
"Doctor Strange" is one of the best Marvel solo films in their filmography, achieving to do many things right and introducing some very interesting elements to the Cinematic Universe. First of all is, you know, magic. Although somehow glossed over in Thor's movies, magic is properly introduced and given a very cool look and feel in this movie, full with colors and odd angles and people jumping around. The action scenes in this movie feel very refreshing, and they are actually very original – I'm sorry I can't tell you how they're original, as I feel it would be spoiling some surprises.
What really caught my attention about this movie were the colors. Holy crap are there colors in this movie. And not just in the costumes, but in the spells and backgrounds and everything around, everything is full of different colors and shades and brightness, and it's awesome. The people at DC and Warner should take note; grey and blue aren't the only colors in the pallet.
This isn't a formal review, this is just my short opinion on why "Doctor Strange" is more than worthy of being part of the MCU. I can't really say anything without spoiling it, so I won't. All performances are pretty good, the movie feels great as a standalone project so you don't need to know Marvel to enjoy it, the special effects are better than ever, and, in the end, there are many interesting things to come to the MCU in the near future, thanks to everything that was established here.
If I had to give it a score, it'd be an 8.5/10, easily.
Peace out.
