If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me this question, then I would just about be a millionaire. It seems as if my explanations are never quite satisfying to hear. "Why are you wearing makeup?" Starting off my day with about 10 minutes of putting a little bit of makeup on didn't really seem like an issue to me. I don't put makeup on to cover up what I look like or to hide myself, I want to enhance my features. And it always seems to backfire as if the makeup that I've put on to feel pretty was actually for some guy that I was trying to impress.
For most girls, makeup is a form of art or a way to express themselves. Whether they are going all out with a full face or simply want to try a new natural look, it should not be assumed that us women are constantly trying to impress others. I wear makeup so I feel beautiful. I wear makeup because maybe I wanted to try a new look and I didn't feel like taking it off before I went out. I also wear makeup to feel like the best version of myself.
Most women are confident in themselves that they don't need makeup to feel beautiful, to attract someone or to impress someone. But personally, makeup for me is a way to start my day. Waking up in the morning and getting ready usually entails putting a little bit of makeup on my face. It's a routine, and I've become accustomed to it. I don't wear it to look nice for that cute guy in my class, but simply for the fact that I want to impress myself. I want to look in the mirror and think, "Damn, my skin looks really great today or wow my eyeshadow really makes my eyes stand out."
Makeup is about expressing yourself. Because there are so many unique and creative makeup looks, you always want to try out something new. Red lipstick, winged eyeliner or a sharper contour, the sky really is the limit for us makeup junkies. And the best part is, if you mess it up, then you can just wipe it all off.
Makeup honestly is all about self-empowerment and feeling confident in yourself. Yes, we should feel confident in our own skin, but there is nothing wrong with a little concealer here or there to help us out. I have friends who are full-fledged makeup artists, and I also have friends who don't like to wear much makeup, like myself. But despite the amount of physical makeup that someone is wearing, we shouldn't be criticized for wearing makeup to work, the store or anywhere that we go. The next time someone stops you and asks why you're wearing makeup, stand up and let them know how beautiful and confident you feel, with and without makeup, but some days you just want to put some on. It's as simple as that.
