When it’s time for college, a lot of students just want to live it up and live in the moment, aka YOLO. Well, there is plenty of time for that during the school year and once you graduate, but once it becomes your junior year, you really need to start thinking long term. No one realizes how fast college goes. One day you are moving into your dorm room for the first time and then all of a sudden you are buying your cap and gown and walking across the stage to receive the most expensive piece of paper you will ever get. Where did the time go?

Well, that’s what a lot of college students don’t realize. Companies nowadays are looking for college students that have more experience in their specific fields of study and worry less about the degrees you have received. This is hard to accept, considering how much money each and every one of us put into going to college. So you may be wondering why I am taking the time out of my summer to write about the importance of internships. The reason why I am writing this is because I believe that going out and getting an internship will be the best thing you have done during your college years. Currently, I am setting up my career before I even graduate and that is a really great achievement to have.

Reasons Why Internships Are a Great Way to Go:

  1. Depending on the college, you can receive college credit by doing an internship!
  2. You can get paid more when you graduate because of the one or more internships you have completed.
  3. When going with an internship in your field of study, you can figure out if you are going down the right path or not.
  4. You will gain confidence and improve your work habits and motivation.
  5. You will learn so many new skills that you will wonder why you even took college classes because you don’t learn nearly as much as you do during an internship.

Last but surely not least, you could get the opportunity to get a paid internship. Waking up and going to my internship every day and knowing that I am learning so much and getting paid on top of it makes it all worth it! Seriously, take the time to create a LinkedIn profile and start networking, you never know who is going to message you about an amazing opportunity! There is more time in the day then you think, so don’t think that taking on an internship during the summer is going to be the end of your life! When you get closer to graduation, the only thing that you should be thinking about is setting up a solid career by the time you do graduate so that you don’t have to worry about bills - or student loans.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
