A few days ago I found an article floating around Facebook from totalfratmove.com. This article provoked my interest when I realized it was from a public university that a lot of my friends back home attend, so naturally I was curious why this article was being shared so much on social media. Well as it turns out it was about a fraternity chapter at Illinois State University, which was removed from campus last spring. The members of said fraternity decided to make a video that will make you question the their logic behind posting such a questionable video like theirs to the internet.
Delta Sigma Phi is a fraternity that has a chapter at Illinois State University, who has seen their chapter close due to 'repeated violations' by violating the rules of their nationals. They have had their fair share of violations with their national headquarters for different reasons, but what made them go off the deep end with this video, the world may never know:
In their video they decided to break pretty much every rule about social media revolving around their chapter, in a short two minute video. As said by the original article covering the story by totalfratmove.com, this was the Illinois State Chapter's version of giving their nationals "A giant middle finger." In this video posted on Sept. 16, the Epsilon Omega chapter of Delta Sigma Phi shoots what looks to be a cheesy version of a college frat movie. My favorite portion of the video is their "warning" that none of the alcohol or illegal substances are the real thing, but instead they are just "props." When clearly we all know what is going on here.
What I don't understand (and what you probably do not either), is the fact that they were probably hoping to get their chapter back eventually if they really liked being apart of greek life, so why did they post this video? Another special touch that the members that participated in the video, did was that they all took a chapter photo of them flipping off the camera with their house as a background for the photo. At the beginning the initial portrait of the chapter in front of their house leads you to believe that maybe, just maybe, they are trying to fight for their house to stay on campus. Well you and I were wrong. They instead just expose everything you might think they wouldn't want to share with the entire Internet...
This is pretty disappointing in my eyes, coming from an active member of greek life who always gets the "oh you are in a sorority" comment, that every greek life member seems to get. Which is on behalf of the questionable acts that some organizations do, that cast a negative light on all of greek life.
So next time when you want to throw basically an "end of the world/chapter" rager, I suggest keeping it off of the Internet and trying to not get yourself shutdown in the first place to avoid any conflicts or an awkward situation like this.
But hey, at least we got a good laugh that lifts the mood -- the most prized possession that was lost in a chapter house fire in 2011 was a scooter cooler, which the image has sadly been removed since I saw the article.
