5 Reasons Why My Dad Is My Best Friend
Mallory Root

All my life, I've been told I'm a "Daddy's Girl." My tall stature, horrible annoyance with crowded malls, and need for everything to be in right place can only be due to one guy: my dad. He's been my favorite person to hang out with forever. Whether it's a coffee date or simply sitting on the couch watching a ball game, I can't imagine spending my time with anyone else. He's great for so many reasons, so here are a few.

1. He's always been there to help me.

Whether it was catch for me when I needed to practice pitching or show him a new cheer I came up with, my dad was (and still is) attentive and will drop everything to watch me. Through this, he's taught me how to be loyal, to always be there for friends and family. Loyalty is something hard to learn, but, luckily, I had the best teacher.

2. He's my number one fan.

He's been my coach for more years than I can remember, and even if I made a mistake or made a dumb play, he would support me and tell me to get them next time. Throughout all the competitions I've performed in, he's been in the stands, shaking because he was just as nervous as I was. When I win, he showers me with love and pride, and when I fail, he still does the same.

3. He never gives up on me.

College has had some points of struggle, as it does for everyone at some point. When I'm stressed to the max and just want to give up, who's there to push me and keep me motivated? My dad. He tells me to remember why I'm there, what my family has given up for me to be there, and to work my butt off so I can have a bright future. I owe my success to him.

4. He has taught me how I should be treated.

My mom and dad have a love that I pray one day I have. The love they share is so visible and beautiful and has shown me to never settle for anything less. I've grown up watching my dad treat my mom like a princess and have learned that we all deserve that, too.

5. His love for his kids is endless.

Both my parents have made incredible sacrifices for my brother and I. My dad has given up many opportunities so that we have a good life. He loves us to no end and for that I am eternally grateful.

So thank you, Dad, for being such a good role model, coach, fan, and most importantly, thank you for being my best friend.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
