Six Reasons Why I Love to Create Food

Cooking has always been one of my greatest passions. Here are just six reasons why.

1. I love to eat

Cinnamon Roll

I can make whatever I feel like eating and make it exactly the way I like it. I love cinnamon rolls, so why not make some that are larger than my face?

2. Cooking reminds me of home

Coconut Lentil Curry and White Rice

My mom cooked dinner for our family every night. She made anything from Lasagna to Kimchi, Tacos to Indian Curry. When I get homesick, I cook one of her recipes and home doesn't feel so far away.

3. Cooking comforts me

Freshly baked bread with raspberry jam and hot chocolate

Nothing in this world will ever be able to calm me down during midterms like warm bread. The stress of memorizing theorems is no match for carbs.

4. Cooking helps me to relate to others

Linguine with beef, tomatoes, and artichoke

This dish was made with a friend. As he and I cooked together, I learned about his childhood, how he learned to cook, and his food preferences.

5. Cooking challenges me

Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies and Almond Milk

Sure, the cookies are good, but how can I make them crispier on the bottom while keeping the center soft? How can I reduce the sweetness without making them too bland?

6. Cooking brings me joy

Bacon

Just a plate of bacon. Just a plate of happiness. Whether I'm cooking for someone else or just for myself, I find joy in cooking food.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.
