Detroit's Coney Island

As many of you know, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I would even argue that this is the most important meal of the day, especially if I am at home on a Saturday morning when my dad is cooking. Eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes - all of it. When I’m not at home, most Saturday mornings if I am not cooking breakfast for myself, you can find me at a Coney Island. That being said, here are 9 reasons why Coney Islands are the best.

1. ALL HAIL THE ALL DAY BREAKFAST

This is my favorite thing. Breakfast is the best meal, so do not fight me on this. From eggs to biscuits (and my personal favorite: French toast), they are all covered by the island. Whether you’re there to cure a hangover or to eat all day breakfast-y goodness at 9pm, they are always there for you. I would even argue that this is more groundbreaking than McDonald's all day breakfast.

2. Coney dogs

They're my dad’s personal favorite and the real reason Coney Islands exist. Also, let’s be real, you can’t get any more Michigan than a Koegel's hot dog with all of the coney fixins.

3. Pancakes

Coney Island's pancakes are almost as good as my the ones my dad makes (almost). To me, pancakes are really just vehicles for syrup and butter, and they're by far in my top three breakfast foods.

4. Endless coffee

I am a total caffeine junkie. Conies help to fuel this by giving me practically bottomless cups of coffee (OH HAPPY DAYS).

5. Sausage links

Not patties. Unpopular opinion: links are better. Do not challenge me on this or tell me they’re bad for my health.

6. Most are open 24/7

So for all of you students that know what goes down on the weekends, you know how awesome this is.

7. FRENCH TOAST

Let me put it straight to you: French Toast is my favorite breakfast food. Put some strawberries and/or peaches on it and I’m the happiest person in the world. According to one of my friends, when the waitress gives me French Toast, I look like a kid on Christmas.

8. How can you not like diners?

The cute booths, yummy food, good coffee, and, if you play your cards right, great friends. Also, some of them play country music and Motown, which brings me to my next point.

9. Pure Michigan

Coney Islands are as Pure Michigan as you can get. With the Motown playing in the background, Coney dogs, an all-day breakfast on the table, and great friends around it, you won’t want to miss out on these Michigan classics.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…

If you go to or went to Kent State, then more than likely you have done or will do some of these things.

1. You’ve slipped and fallen on the ice at least once.

The winters at Kent are brutal, and while the heated sidewalks and some great snow boots are always a help, there’s no chance you won’t bust it on the ice at least once in your four plus years at school.
