Many of us are familiar with the 1950’s comic strip “Peanuts,” created by Charles M. Schultz, which later turned into TV shows, movies, amusement parks, and is still successful today. What makes this series so great is its characters, and how scary-relatable they are. Even though Charlie Brown and his friends are just children, for some reason I find myself in each one of the characters. You probably will too.
Charlie Brown:
Charlie Brown is usually a sad bundle of confusion. He is always making frequent stops at Lucy’s Psychiatric Booth and paying her 5 cents to get some pretty worthless advice. Referred to by his peers as a “blockhead,” his best friend is a dog, and he pretty much sucks at baseball. He also tends to eat lunch alone while admiring his crush, the Little Red-Haired Girl, from afar. Sound familiar?
Linus van Pelt:
Charlie Brown’s friend is the most insecure of the whole bunch. He is constantly toting around a blue blanket, and tends to be surprising philosophic. He has a girl, Sally, always following him, declaring her love for him, but has no interest in petty relationships. Linus is much more focused on his belief in the Great Pumpkin, and basically, just doesn’t know when to quit.
Lucy van Pelt:
I could describe Lucy in one word: loud. With the temper of a bull and freight train-size vocal chords, you will most likely find her lecturing her little brother or defending women’s rights in the classroom. This is not to say she isn’t a boy addict; Lucy spends most of her afternoons curled up on the edge of Schroeder’s piano, begging him to love her.
Sally Brown:
With a fondness for older men (Linus), Sally knows exactly what she wants. When her brother Charlie is gone, she wastes no time claiming his room as her own. She also does pretty badly in school, and tends to blame it on the teacher, not her lack of studying.
Schroeder:
Schroeder can be seen always playing a toy piano, and looks up to great musicians such as Beethoven. He is frequently interrupted by the woman who is in love with him, Lucy, which prevents him from truly reaching his dream. He’s never played on a real piano, and probably never will. Reality is just a little too scary for him.
Pig Pen:
Pig-Pen could be referred to as a “hot mess.” He is always dirty, dust flying around everyone, and just about everyone stays away from him to prevent a coughing fit. He even refers to himself as a dust magnet. Ever have one of those days?
Peppermint Patty:
The tomboy of the gang, Peppermint Patty is very outgoing. Always referring to Charlie Brown as “Chuck”, she has a crush on him, but always makes it seem like he is the one flirting with her. She doesn’t understand that Snoopy is a dog, and commonly refers to him as “the funny-looking kid with the big nose.” She’s usually fearless but at times insecure, making comments about how she will never be beautiful because of her large nose.
Snoopy:
Snoopy is Charlie and Sally’s fun-loving beagle. Always on the hunt for lots of food, he even has a habit of making up songs and dances for how much he wants to eat. He’s a professional doghouse decorator and tends to sleep the majority of the day away. When he’s not passed out, you can find him with his bird sidekick Woodstock imagining ways to kill the time in the backyard.
