As I step back onto campus for my final semester of my undergrad career, I have been presented with the scenario of forcing college on every student and talking down on those who chose to enter the workforce or chose to go to a trade school. This concept blows my mind. This world is much more than men and women behind computer screens. This world wouldn't function without all of the electricians, welders, plumbers, and that's just a small listing.
College degrees can carry you a long way, but once that fancy piece of paper loses its sparkle, the only thing that will continue to impress the employer will be your work ethic. Work ethic isn't something you learn in a classroom. Work ethic is something you learn by doing.
There are a lot of kids that just float their way through college because Mommy and Daddy have a job lined up for you in the family business, so there's no reason to look beyond that. There's a reason why people call our generation entitled. So many of us just expect our dream jobs to fall into our laps. Well that's just not going to happen. Too many people look at a college degree as the quick route to a 6 figure job. Get a grip people. No one stumbles upon a 6 figure job unless you win the lottery.
Too many people are treated inferior because they chose to enter the workforce instead of college. These people are the hard workers that build the roads, keep your house cool in the summer, and the reason your car is still running. You don't have to work in a corporate office to be important.
Society thrives far too much on putting others down just because they don't go to work in a suit and tie. We need to become more accepting of other professions. Every job serves a purpose whether you are a plumber or a CEO.
