I always knew I wanted to go to school. It was obvious from the time I was in elementary school and I decided that I wanted to be a teacher. It switched many times after that to a variety of majors, but I made my way back to teaching. I always loved school. It is not necessarily recess, lunch, and extracurricular activities that caused excitement in my schooling career, but the classes and teachers. The support throughout high school by teachers along with the support of my family, I am going into the teaching field knowing that it is for me. Graduating from high school was never going to be the end of my education.

I was able to shadow a teacher of mine during high school and then in a college course, I had just to prove that I was taking the right path. I had “assignments” to do in the class if you will. Teacher things like making a seating chart, creating quizzes, grading work, and putting together a lesson plan. If I was not sure before, after all of that I definitely was. It was like being in a high school classroom all over when it came to learning new things and ways to create for the classroom. It is being in the classroom that makes me happy even though I just spent 13 years there previously. Tons of colleges have great teaching programs, so the problem was picking where exactly would be the best fit for me. I graduated from high school early and started immediately at a community college to cut expenses and get a head start. This being said though, I knew I would be transferring to IUPUI at some point. My dad went to IUPUI, which made it easy to have an inside look on things there with admissions, financial aid, and advising. This transfer is opening so many doors for me to explore my future career along with finding a minor that is suitable as well. So far, I have done my time at community college, five semesters actually.

There are so many programs at IUPUI. My major and minor are both English influenced. My high school English teachers were extremely influential and supportive, plus the teaching program advisors are extremely helpful and supportive as well.

So! Goodbye community college and hello IUPUI.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
