Chances are that if you have any sort of connection to the outside world, you are familiar with the whole Colin Kaepernick scandal. For those who aren’t in the loop, Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem because he “won’t pledge himself that abuses people of color”. This obviously created heavy backlash for Kaepernick, as well as some support. Obviously, there are two sides in this sort of socio-political battle. We have those who say he has the right to do so according to the first amendment, and there are those who say that he is Satan incarnate. I’m here to present a third argument that fuses both of the sides into a better one. I personally think Colin Kaepernick indeed does have the right to do so, but I still think he is a complete degenerate and hypocrite.

I am indeed a firm believer that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and that the rights outlined in it are sacred. So Kaepernick does indeed have a constitutional right to sit, as well as to protest. The gripe with this whole situation is not about rights. The problem lies in the fact of respect. People nowadays have just become so pompous about what they believe in, that they disregard all respect. This can be seen in any extremist group in the world. ISIS disregards respect for other variations of Muslims that do not abide by their beliefs. The KKK holds no regard for any other human life aside from white. The BLM movement holds no regard for their surroundings. Respect is something that is so far gone in the world, and it’s disgusting. The fact that Kaepernick cannot even have the decency to respect the flag, just because he believes it is a symbol of oppression, is sickening. The flag is supposed to be a symbol of triumph over tyranny, but he is perverting it with his agenda.

Speaking of which, his agenda is merely a ploy to keep everyone separated, as well as to claim a shred of fame. He speaks about he will stand with the oppressed. There’s a saying that no one is a prophet in their own land. How can Kaepernick stand with those who feel “oppressed” when he was adopted into a rich family, was a three-sport athlete with a 4.0 in high school, and was recruited to play his dream sport in college. He currently makes US$19mil a year. If you feel oppressed, I don’t think you’d want a false prophet to lead your movement.

Back to the topic of respect. There are so many other respectful ways to conduct a protest against racial inequality, yet Kaepernick decides to offend masses of people by refusing to do one of the most basic American things. A flag that stands for the effort of men and women to keep this country safe from harm, is just so easily disrespected just because he technically has the right to do so. The fact that he has support is even more appalling. As much as I love my countrymen, it sickens me to see how many people will so readily support anti-American causes, and will openly say that they hate the country. Instead of being a disrespectful snake, Kaepernick could use his money to actually fund movements, and actually make a change. Oh what? He doesn’t want to let go of his money? Gee, it’s almost like all he wants to do is incite separation between Americans by complaining and not actually doing anything. It’s not like we haven’t seen it before. Oh wait, we have.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
