5+1 Reasons Why Cold Weather is Better than Hot

We're now into the tail end of summer break and yet the heat is only piling on further. By now some people have lost the excitement of summer and now are feeling the wear of the constant heat. And so I thought it would be the perfect time to give my fairly unpopular opinion that the cold is better than the heat and that winter is better than summer.

Covering yourself in blankets

Maybe it's just me, but having the covers and sheets pulled over me when I go to bed is one of the most comfortable feelings ever. When the weather is cold out is the perfect time to experience that feeling, but when it's hot out, the extra heat of the covers only adds more heat and becomes unbearable. The same can be said for sitting on the couch with a extra comfy blanket wrapped around you. And the cold can be a great excuse to snuggle up with a loved one under a blanket!

Snow!

I know, I know. Not everyone likes the snow, especially people who live in places that have to deal with massive amounts of it, but I still think that not matter how painful it can be, it is still beautiful nonetheless. There is nothing quite like waking up in the morning and seeing perfectly fresh and untouched snow from the night before spread across the ground. A pure white sheet that literally glistens in the morning sun. I could go on and on.

Winter/cold only activities

Of course this is rather obvious but you can only do cold-weather or winter activities when it's cold. You may be able to ski or skate in the summer, but you still need the cold. While I haven't had much experience with ice-skating, I do have quite a bit with skiing and I would say it is my favorite physical activity. There is an awesome thrill from racing down a slope in skis and seeing the trees flash by around you. It does take a lot to get there(getting to the place you want to ski, getting the equipment, putting it all on, and getting up the slope), but that only adds to the excitement of the sport.

The reign of the sun is over!

Maybe a overly dramatic and not exactly true, but true enough for me! To clarify I mostly mean that the sun isn't pounding down on you all day and scorching your skin. I know a good amount of people actually enjoy the feel of the sun on their backs, and to an extent I do as well, but with skin that burns nearly instantly, I mostly feel worry when I feel the sun on my back or neck. No matter how much sunscreen I put on there always seems to be somewhere that gets burned.

There is, of course, still a possibility for sunburns even in the cold. Just because there's snow on the ground doesn't mean the snow has stopped. As a matter of fact snow can reflect the sun quite strongly and easily burn your skin if you aren't prepared. This may sound like it isn't really any better than summer, BUT in cold weather you wear clothes that cover up most of your skin. So in actuality unless you decide to embrace your inner polar bear and dress for summer then you most likely won't need to worry about the sun.

The fireplace is lit

My inner pyromaniac is quite weak so I don't particularly love fire, but a lit fireplace is much more than where the fire and heat is. It serves to bring together the entire family into one space. A space where they are can easily talk and be together. I don't want to get too far off from the topic, but when life is constantly moving so fast that you can't seem to get together with everyone even if you live in the same house, that time when everyone can stop for a minute and be together is an amazing thing.

Christmas!

This one is winter specific so it does slightly diverge from my primary topic, but I love Christmas way too much to not include it. In my family Christmas isn't just a day or even a week. The entire month of December becomes a winter fantasy in my house. Christmas music is almost always playing and everyone is so much happier than normal because the Christmas spirit is SO infectious. It is a seriously magical time that I could never hope to describe adequately.

And that's why I feel cold weather and the winter season is superior to the heat and the summer! It is all up to personal preference in the end, but I hope even the people that hate the cold can understand why I enjoy it so much!

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
