Maybe you're not a student athlete, class president, or top in your class. Does that mean you have to limit yourself to new ideas and participation in anything? Absolutely not. If you're in college, you'll notice an abundance of flyers and emails promoting clubs and various student organizations. Do you ever take the time to read them, or do you ignore them? The thing is, college is full of these groups all over your campus, always looking for new members. They are important for a variety of reasons.
A learning experience
In a club, your skills begin to develop and create something new. In other words, you can do what you're good at, but can learn how to do it differently, or even better. Were you the best frisbee player in your town? Join the ultimate frisbee team to show it off! Practice makes perfect! You might even learn a new technique to apply in during games. Whatever the club it is you're interested in, you can gain knowledge from those with greater understanding and become more understanding yourself in the field that peeks your interest.
Actual involvement
Every time your mom calls you, you can tell her you're actually doing something today. Just like a job, clubs can have deadlines for certain projects and events that you might have to attend. It creates a schedule to keep you busy during the day, a schedule with something you like to do.
The more support your club gains, the more likely you'll be able to go to new places outside of the college campus. Remember, the club you join can be very important to you. You want it to grow and be able to fly from the nest. What I mean by this is, the more members, the more love and the more of a chance to be able to travel. The club can find new places that hosts events, games, or conventions that stand for everything the club is based on and expands upon it. This can be a panel talking about certain practices, or a sporting event that tests the knowledge and expertise of club members. One of the best parts is that in the middle of the events and skill-building is a chance to enjoy the new area you're in, take a few pictures, and take your mind off of studies and work.
You stand out from the rest
I'm telling you, employers will love the club involvement on your resume. It can show not only what you're good at, but shows social/communication skills, leadership, and passion for what you do. It defines you as someone different from other people looking for the same job.
You make many new friends
One of the most important things about being part of a club. Your fellow members WILL become some of your best friends in a very short span of time, if they aren't your best friends already. The more involved you are with the club, the closer you become with them. They become something like a family. They like what you like that got them in the club to begin with, but you may find other similar interests as well and connect immediately. This applies especially with traveling to the various events with them and anything else you all enjoy. The parties you all go to, the journeys you embark, the late nights, the memories you share, it will be some of the best moments in your time at college. These friends are people that you want to stay in touch with after school and beyond. They play a huge part in:
The unforgettable times
College is full of these, and they are especially prevalent in clubs. The friends and club members you will be spending a lot of time with will create a lot of stories to tell to your friends and family back home. These times are priceless. The embarrassing moments. The work put into the club. The inside jokes, confusing to everyone not in the club, will keep a smile on your face always. Not only this but the places you go, the connections you make, and the events your club hosts/attend are what you make of them. I can only hope you make the most of them, because they go by fast.
You discover more about yourself
These clubs develop your skills, sure, but you may learn completely unrelated and new skills. You might find something you never thought you would like or never thought you could do. You may even unearth an interest or ability that was long forgotten that can be used once more.
Get involved on campus, it opens many doors in life. See what clubs have what you're looking for, or have something unfamiliar that may be worth exploring. The friends you make and memories you share will make it all worth it.
