Why Cleveland Is Not A 'Mistake On The Lake'

Cleveland is so much more than its reputation.

Why Cleveland Is Not A 'Mistake On The Lake'

I was born and raised here in Cleveland, Ohio. As I've gotten older, I became aware of the reputation Cleveland gets; I've heard Cleveland being called "The Mistake On The Lake." But Cleveland is far from being a mistake. Cleveland is the land that I love, and I'm proud to say that I am from here. If you are considering making a trip to Cleveland, do it! And If you aren't considering visiting Cleveland, I hope that by the end of this article, you will make it a consideration.

Between Cleveland's beautiful Metroparks to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there is something for everyone to do in Cleveland. Lake Erie is beautiful to go see and watch the sunset with your family and friends. Go take a walk in one of the Metroparks, go to the art museum to look at some art, eat dinner at a restaurant downtown. Go to a Cavs, Indians or Browns game while you are at it. Go see a play at Playhouse Square, which is the largest performing arts center in the United States outside of New York. If you get sick while you are here, you are in some of the best hand — Cleveland Clinic is known nationwide for its health care. The Cleveland Orchestra plays at Severance Hall and is worldwide known for its excellence. The Cleveland Orchestra is referred to as a member of the "Big Five." Sports-wise, the Cleveland Indians is currently in first place. We are also home to Cleveland Browns which is our football team.

Cleveland was put back on the national stage when the Cleveland Cavaliers won a championship for the first time in 52 years. I was watching game seven knowing that if we won, it would be a historic event. I sat through that whole game nervously watching each play, hoping for the best. When the game was finally over and we had won, pure happiness echoed through the city and Cleveland's suburbs; happy tears, fireworks and screams of enjoyment followed. Cleveland finally did it. The happiness continued to the parade that was held downtown where 1.3 million people came to celebrate the win.

I hope you visit Cleveland and see that the reputation for this city is incorrect.

See you in Believeland!

Sincerely,

A Girl who Loves CLE

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
