Why I Chose My Major in Advertising

There is more to advertising than just the graphics and the slogans.

Why I Chose My Major in Advertising

Of all the majors out there, I choose advertising going into Ball State.

I have contemplated switching but as I go into my fourth semester, it seems that advertising will be endgame. I have been both criticized and praised for my major choice and being the strong headed person I am, it has not affected my decision.

The advertising program at Ball State is placed under the journalism program and the classes focus more on the art of advertising versus the technical aspects which is why I chose it. I want to do the creative part of it all. With that, I have a minor in marketing to get that business aspect that I would need to help me succeed. With all that being said, what could I do with advertising?

Well, there are endless possibilities in a world of media.

Something that I have always loved to do even as a young child is to give back. Serving on mission trips and serving here at home to my own community. I have a heart for giving to those less fortunate. A heart that is ready to take action for a cause.

For a while, before I started at college, I thought about being a missionary but that would give me little income. Recently, it dawned on me that with my degree I could go above and beyond and make the impact that I am hoping to make for a cause that is beyond me. I want to take my advertising skills and advocate and advertise for a good cause.

The one I have in mind right now is helping National Geographic and their fight for our environment whether it be animals in need or global warming.

Advertising has the ability to reach people who would not normally hear about what is going on. It has the ability to touch hearts and tug on emotions and promote action be taken. Getting more people on board has the ability to create a real difference.

It is crazy to think that something so small can create that but if you know how to do your job and can do it well then it is possible to create that action needed to make a difference. That is the core reason that I chose advertising and why I do what I do. The world is in danger and I want to be someone and leave this world knowing I made a difference in the right direction.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
