Why I Chose Elementary Education

This career is not for everyone, however, this career is for me.

Why I Chose Elementary Education

I want to teach because teachers have the greatest opportunity to impact children and the opportunity to change their lives in a positive or negative way. I desire to be the teacher who makes a positive difference and leaves students with a great memory of the school year. Teachers who genuinely love their job make school fun for their students which in turn make a difference in their lives. Working with children has always been something I enjoy because I have a passion for teaching and a passion for children.

Many people think teachers (and I for pursuing this career) are crazy for wanting to be around children for eight hours or more a day, five days a week, 10 months of the year. This is because they do not have a passion for teaching children, which is okay because this career is not for everyone. This career is for me, however, and I whole-heartedly believe this is what I am to do the rest of my life. I am here to teach children everything they need to know academically to advance to the next grade level and also teach them valuable life lessons. In addition, I will extend love and encouragement to every student I have the privilege to teach.

Teachers have the ability to either make a positive or negative impact on students. I remember my favorite and least favorite teachers. My favorite teachers are who I learned the most from both academically and personally. I want to make learning enjoyable for my students and help them grow as individuals. I want to teach my students to love, encourage, and always be who God created them to be. I want to make a difference in their lives and I believe God has called me a teacher to be able to do that. My goal is to show them the love they deserve and the love God shows us. Love is the most important quality a teacher can have.

“Train up a child in the way he should; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6. To me this verse not only applies to raising a child in a biblical way at home, but also in a school setting. Teachers have the greatest opportunity to impact children. Children can be impacted either positively or negatively. I have experienced both positive and negative and I want my students to have a positive experience.

I want to be a teacher because I love working with children, I feel this is what God has called me to do and I want to make a difference in the lives of children. I am very excited for the day when I will have my own classroom full of students. Although every day will not be perfect and there will be tough days, I know it will be so rewarding to see my students grow and learn. I believe teaching is one of the most rewarding careers due to the love and joy teachers receive from their students. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life working with them and helping them grow.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
