Prior to college, I had heard of double majoring, but it was never something that I thought about doing myself.
That is until I discovered the world of communications, media, and journalism. My introduction to this industry really came from my Gold Award during my junior year in high school. As part of my Girl Scout Gold Award, I had to put together flyers, a website, and other promotional materials to help advertise the event, and then use those materials along with videos and my website to continue to spread the message and goal behind the event. I really enjoyed this part of the event, especially the website creation and the social media promotion.
Fast forward to the end of my senior year and I finally got the chance to experience what it's like in journalism and media. I spent most of the school year reading articles off of Odyssey and I fell in love with the content and the platform. When the Fredonia branch started advertising for writers in the "Class of 2020" Facebook page, I just knew that I had to try and join. I loved to write, but I was losing motivation and interest in the fiction writing that I had been doing all throughout high school. My hope was that this new writing medium would be something that'd re-spark my fire, and boy did I underestimate how big that spark would be. I've been writing for Odyssey since the end of May and it is the reason I chose Communications: Public Relations as a second major.
I know it's going to be a lot of work, especially since I am keeping my original major of Molecular Genetics as well. I thought about just picking up a minor, but there were a lot of courses within the communications department that I wanted to take and I would've just surpassed my minor requirements. I'm excited to be starting my communications courses next semester and starting my journey towards becoming a PR representative.
