After you graduate high school, you are welcomed into this new world that can be quite scary and at times stressful. This world is referred to as the adult world, or a step closer, which would be college. When you go from having to wake up at 6 am to get to school before 7:30 and going through 8 hour days. To not having a class until 1 pm and being done by 4! Now I am not saying that you have to go to college, you can do other career goals as well but for this article I am going to focus on the college aspect.
College can be a fun, but a very scary experience when you first start! Trust me, I went through my freshman year last year and I was nervous and scared at times to think about my future. You go from having a set schedule each day and certain subjects that you have to take, to choosing the classes you want to take and the major you want to do. Choosing a career path can be very difficult because sometimes you just do not know what you want to do! It is perfectly okay to not know yet. A person that goes through college will change their major often because after taking some classes they can narrow down what they like and do not like. There are also people in the world that have a general idea of what they want to do, but they could study more than one area and still have the same outcome they wanted. I happen to be one of those people that have a general idea of what they want, but don't know which way to take it. There are opportunities at universities that allow you to double major.
Double majoring is hard, I am not going to lie! I have a heavy loaded semester coming up with 18 to 19 credit hours. When people ask me what I am majoring in, and I tell them that I am a double major in Criminal Justice and Forensic Psychology, I will usually get the same remarks like "are you nuts", "that's crazy", "how can you do that" and more. To answer those questions, I am not crazy I decided to double major because I loved both areas of study and with that area I want to go into, I can use both majors.
Some benefits of double majoring can include two degrees in two separate job fields, that way if you can't find a job that combines both majors, you have 2 backups and can take either direction. Another benefit with being qualified in different areas, thus opening up multiple job opportunities, would be that once you obtain the job, you can impress your boss with further knowledge of your other major if a incident comes up. Having another major can help enhance not only your work but others as well because you can teach others some general knowledge, thus enhancing everyones' abilities, which can help the department you are working with.
While you struggle over the late nights, thinking "why did I do this to myself", think about the benefits of completing a double major, by having more access to job opportunities.
