I don’t always love running. More often than not, I actually don’t enjoy it at all. The thought of having to wake up early enough to beat the summer heat and still ending up scorching hot and drenched in sweat isn’t all that enticing. The thought of debating how many layers are necessary to brave the cold winter air and ending up with a frozen nose regardless is not all that appealing either. Yet, I continue to do it. I continue to set my alarm, lace up my shoes, and hit the pavement.
I run, because it allows me to be alone with my thoughts.
With my headphones in, I tune the rest of the world out. For the duration of my run, I let my mind wander. Whether it wanders to something that is currently bothering me, what I have in store for that day, or my future plans, it is time that I can devote completely to myself. And on my crazy, hectic days, I am especially grateful for this time.
I run, because it’s a sport for any age.
Running is a sport that allows you to compete no matter how old you are. Whether it is competing against yourself to get better personal record or competing against others in organized races, it allows you to challenge yourself to work for a new best.
I run, because it keeps me in shape.
Obviously, running comes with wonderful health benefits! It is great for your heart, as it is one of the best ways to condition your cardiovascular system. Along with this, running works a majority of your body. It helps to tone and strengthen the muscles in your lower body and core while burning a ton of calories in the process! Additionally, despite the debate that running is bad for your joints, many scientists have actually proven otherwise. Their research shows that the activity instead increases bone mass and helps to improve knee and other joint health.
I run, because it is such a convenient way to exercise.
Running is an activity that can be done literally anywhere. Whether at home or traveling, in the city or in the country, running is accessible to all. This exercise requires neither a gym membership nor expensive workout equipment. All you need is simply a pair of running shoes.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I run for the amazing post-run feeling.
After completing a run, despite how I most often look and feel like complete death, I am left with the most magnificent feeling in which nothing can compare to. While filled with endorphins, I am also filled with a tremendous sense of accomplishment. I know that I have put in the effort to work hard and push myself. No matter how unproductive the rest of my day may go, I at least know that I have given this much and have done what many lack the drive to do.
